Another Bentley Update (crystals)

Big bad black Bentley as been battling crystals. Last month, he peed blood on one of our walks, so I took him in, and he had struvite crystals as well as Calcium Oxalates, and from what the vet says, that is very unusual. He also had a raging bladder infection. His PH was 8.0 at that time, and apparently I guess it's the calcium oxalates that aren't supposed to form in such a high PH environment. Anyhow, he's been on S/D for a month.. great food to get rid of crystals, but in all other ways, I think it's awful. Today I got the results back on his most recent urine test.. PH is down to 5.5 (norm is 6.0-7.0?). The struvites are gone, the bladder infection is gone, but those darn calcium oxalates are still there, though not quite as bad. Now the vet has him on Purina N/F for Kidney Function, and they recommended a powder which I had to order, to sprinkle on his food.. I cannot remember the name offhand. The powder will probably be temporary, the food permanent.. although I'm not so sure I am quick to agree with that. There has got to be a better food out there, that does a similar function, other than this Purina food who's first ingredient is the dreaded CORN. Bentley does NOT do well on foods that have things like corn in it. He itches and licks and all that fun stuff.

Anyone been through this? Used that powder or that food.. or had similar results on a higher quality food?

Glad to hear that most of his results came back improved! As far as an alternative diet, what about asking your vet if you could go with a home cooked like what is used for CRF dogs? This would provide the same results he's looking for out of the Purina.

The powder I'm guessing is calcium carbonate.

I'm glad Bentley's doing better, but darn..those crystals. I feel sorry for him having to eat that food too. Hope you can get him on something better for him. Give him a hug for me.

Cass.
