Uti

I have been hearing about alot of dogs with UT infections lately. How common are they. My foster puppy has one right now, poor girl, squats non stop trying to pee. Hopefully her meds will help soon.

Also the rescue just took in a pit bull that had been abused cuz it kept peeing on the rug....well it turns out she has a UTI too.

And another puppy in our program has one as well.

The vet did tell me today they are more common in female dogs than males, but is this a coincidence, or are they that common?

I am pretty worried about my foster because he was almost potty trained, but now she walks around squating all the time inside and outside, and although no pee comes out, I don't want her thinking she can squat in the house or office.

My boy Sarge had a UTI not too long ago. Found out because he wet my bed while he was sleeping. I had friends over that night too, to spend the night. Weren't sleeping in my room that night! Hehe... but he did it another time. Kept licking himself, actually would whine when he tried to move sometimes. He actually had the presence of crystals in his urine so we had to watch out for kidney stones.

I know UTI in humans are more common in females too. It depends on the person... some people are just more prone to getting them, and sometimes for no aparent reason. One way for humans is lack of fluids... and I think that's how Sarge got his, because they had drank the water one day and finished it off so they went all day without water.

But, I'm not sure if that applies to dogs as well. I know for humans females are more susceptible than males.

Poor girl, I can sympathize with her. I hate those things!!

I wonder if UTI's escalate this time of year because the dogs are peeing in the same areas more, and coming into contact with bacteria more frequently. In the spring, summer and fall, the rain washes everything away outside and we frequently potty them in a larger area.
I don't know. I don't have any experience with UTI's, besides the human kind.
EDIT to add: My guys get cranberry treats. They are dog treats made with cranberries. This could make a difference. I don't remember who makes them, I bought a whole case, because I take cranberry tabs everyday, and thought they might as well too!
