Harley's back legs

We found out what is wrong with Harley's legs. She suffered a spinal injury when she was young. Her owner probably dropped her or let her jump from a really high place. She has partial paralysis in her back legs because of nerve damage. We have an appointment with a surgeon next week to talk about options. This is probably why she isn't potty trained yet. She doesn't seem to have full control of her bladder. I notice she asks to go pee about 20 times a day and at least 6 times at night. I took her to the vet to see if she had a bladder infection and found out about the spinal injury at the same time. The vet took x-rays and found 3 herniated disks and some cartilage dammage in her neck. She told me since a lot of time has passed since the injury there might not be anything the surgeon can do. Usually the best chances for relief are within 24 hours after the injury. I have seen Harleys back legs crossing and turning in for almost 9 months now.

Oh no, poor Harley. I'm so glad she's with you now, I know you'll do all you can. I just hope there is something the vet can do to help her. <---- for you Harley you little trooper. On top of everything else, it can't be fun having to pee 26 times a day.

Cass.

Ahh ,but she is potty trained, She asks to go out every single time. Harley's old owner said she wasn't potty trained and just went pee when ever she felt like it. GRRR!!!! She just couldn't hold it! I can barely keep my temper in check. I rarely get mad at anything but my blood gets boiling every time I think about this. The lady had to know she was hurt and then didn't take her to the vet to see what was wrong. Then she punished Harley for peeing on the floor when it was her fault to begin with!

It's been said before but I'll say it again....Some people just shouldn't be allowed to own dogs.

And that lady is one of them. At least she's found a good home now...and like you said, she is potty trained.

EDIT: Errr...I mean Harley is potty trained...not her previous owner (although I'm going to assume she is too )

Cass.

Poor harley yet lucky harley to now have you to love and care for her.
Some people are just plain lazy when ot comes to letting dogs in and out.
I do hope the specialist can do something for her.
In the meantime here is a hug to keep her going

Aww! poor Harley,it's probably not easy for him either...he's trying so hard.
I too am glad he is with you, Barrett, at least you love and accept him and try to help. God only know what would have happened had he stayed where he was.

I'm so sorry Barrett, that little girl has had a really rough road and it really is a shame that she wasn't taken in sooner but....at least you have her now and I know she's in the best hands possible.

I'm sure you'll make sure that everything that can be done will be done for her. Give her AND yourself a big hug from me!

Harley went potty in the litter box all by herself for the first time today. I have decided to litter train her so she can relieve herself when ever she feels the urge to go. She seems to be picking it up really fast. She has Bailey and Lucy to learn from though. I take her to the litter box every 1/2 hour and she pees everytime....poor little girl! When I go to work I have her in a playpen with the litterbox inside. My husband is coming home on Thursday and we will have opposite days off after that. One of us will be home with the dogs everyday until mid March. Her consultation with the surgeon ( Lucy's surgeon ) will be next Monday so we will know what's going to happen in 5 days. Wish her luck!

Sounds like you have everything under control and I'm glad this little girl has such a great mommy now. I'm amazed that she's learning to use the litter box and I'm sure she's going to be quite happy that she can go potty anytime she wants without getting cold or wet.

I wanted to get her months ago but her owner wouldn't give her up. She met us at the dog park a few times to join our play date. I doggysat Harley twice in the last year for a week each time. She really is such a sweet pup and pretty outgoing now that she is settled in a little more. I haven't had any jealous squabbles with Bailey and Lucy yet so I am keeping my fingers crossed that they will be three best friends for life. I promise to get more pictures up as soon as I can.

I'm glad things are going well overall, and even though surgery may be considered, I'm so happy that you are able to do what you can for her! It's not easy to care for an ill pet, and it's so much harder when you know it could have all been prevented.

Is there a national registry that could be developed for breeders to list who should NEVER be sold a pet again!? There should be!
