barks n purrs go 2gether

A friend of mine implies that I have a bad vet because tomorrow, my dog, Dottie gets spayed and unless there are complications, pets can go home that evening (after 3pm). My friends vet required them to stay over night...I love my vet and so do many people in this area whove came back for repeat alterations (on other pets)...is it ok that he allows pets to go home the same day?

As long as there are no complications, yes, it is fine that she come home that day. She should wake up from surgery, be able walk, eat, drink and go potty before leaving. That way the vet knows all is well.
Keeping pets overnight after spay/neuter surgery has just been "the way it is" for many, many years. Vets are finding that the dogs recover better at home, as long as the owners are dedicated to keeping their babies "down" for a little while (no jumping, no running, potty on leash only...). |

thanx guys, I'm still nervous about it. All surgeries make me that way lol. We have a westie who loves to rough play with her so I guess I'll have to make sure he doesn't do that this weekend.

I just wanted to add that there are lots of reasons that I would be concerned about a vet, and this is not one of them. I actually stay with my dogs through the entire procedure and then take them home with me before they are entirely awake.
I think my vet is great, and because I can take them home like I do, I think she is even better! |

If no one is going to be there over night w/ her while she is recovering I would rather have her home so if something does go wrong it won't be hours until someone finds out.

My girlfriend just had her cocker neutered today...he went in at 8:30 and she picked him up at 4:00. He didn't look like he'd even had it done! So I wouldn't worry to much...it all depends on the vet!

With every dog that I have had spayed or neutered, I dropped them off at 8am, and picked them up anytime after 2pm. That's a couple different vets. I am not comfortable leaving them overnight in some cage, where more than likely there won't be anyone there to help them if they DO have a problem.

we send all our routine spay/neuters home the same day. nobody's there at night to monitor them, so it's much better, if there is a problem, for them to be at home with their owners who can contact the emergency vet.
the one place i worked kept all spay/neuters overnight but they did surgery all day, usually finishing around 4 pm. they were also staffed 24/7 so the pets were monitored at night. |

Both of my dachshunds came home the same day after spay. They went in at 8am and came home after 4pm. They were both fine and pretty much slept the whole night through. My vet does not have anyone stay overnight with the animals. I would couldn't stand being away from my babies or having them spend the night in a cage all alone. I want them home with me so I can spoil and pamper them properly.
