Shamous had his neuter yesterday
, he did very well, ( so did Mommie, I only cried AFTER I was back in the car..lol) . We had to bring a stool sample because he was due for his second round of shots ect. After his first visit, we had him wormed. Well the vet called me yesterday afternoon to tell me he had hook worms and did we bring him anywhere he could have picked them up. The answer to that is no. He stays on our property. The people before us had 3 dogs, plus we live in the boonies and I am sure their are coy dogs around. Is it possible that after 1.5 yrs of the old people being gone that the eggs in the dirt are still viable to pass hooks on to my baby? I don't know athing a bout them either any info would be most helpful. We are putting him on Interceptor immediately for prevention. |

Yes, the soil can hold eggs for a long time, plus, anything else coming through the area that leaves feces may also contaminate your yard.
So, did Shamus get neutered and his shots yesterday? and now he is on interceptor? I ask because many vets now try and spread these things out. It is hard on a dog's immune system to take all of these medicines (poisons) at once, plus heal from a surgery. In the future, if you can, try and spread things out. For instance, my little girl, Jazz, is 12 weeks old this week. Earlier this week she had her distemper vaccination, we also decided she needed some minor surgery, removal of a piece of skin on her ear, when she was 10 weeks, but because we knew her shot was coming up, we did not schedule her surgery until a week and a half after her shot. In my breed, Weimaraners, they also tend to have a hyperactive immune system, so we do try and be extra cautious to not cause any vaccinosis, but Ithink it is a good rule of thumb to follow with any dog, or human for that matter. The healthiest immune system is created by coming into contact with a disease and successsfully fighting it off in the shortest amount of time. That's what vaccines are, you are literally injecting your dog with that illness (usualy killed) in order to activate the immune system to overcome it so that if it comes into contact with it again, it has the appropriate antibodies to fight it off. |
