Small red lump

I bought a small puppy (5 months old) 2 weeks ago, and now just noticed a small red lump (please see picture) on his belly. It feels like a cyst with liquid inside.

He does not react to me touching and he doesn't scratch or lick it.
What do you think it may be?

It could be anything. I'd have the vet check it out and let him make a decision as to whether he should lance it or not.

I agree, better safe than sorry,I'd go see a vet and keep us posted.

If my dog had a lump like that i would take her to the vet asap
It could just be a cyst but I would rather get it seen to. let us know how it goes

I agree, it could be a number of different things and is something that I would be concerned enough about to take the little one to the vet.

Thanks all.

Spoken to the breeder and she is quite sure that from looking at the photo, its just a protuding navel - which is common for a Japanese Chin. She said there is nothing to worry about.

What do you think?

Umbilical hernias are usually congenital, secondary to flawed embryonic development and can at times become a serious issue if part of the protruding intestine becomes entrapped, blood circulation is lost and that part of the intestine dies off.

It isn't something I'd be willing to ignore without having the pup looked over by your vet. Most reputable breeders offer some warranty on things of this nature and often pay for surgery if it's deemed to be needed.

i would have a vet check it and if he thinks that it could be a cyst and removed then do it, i would also ask the vet if it might be a tumor. if says it might then see about a biopsie.

We had a German Shorthair with a herniated umbilical and it needed to be repaired when he was 6 months old. The skin was very thin and it ruptured when he was out in the field. He caught it on a stick when he was jumping over a log. It was a horrible experience for the dog and for us to see him in such pain. I would take your pup to the vet and have it checked out and repaired as soon as you can. Don't wait for such an injury with your dog. It will be much less painful and scarey and much cheaper if you take your pup in now.

That was my dog "Boss". I had him from the time I was 14 until I was 25. He was my heart dog. He was full liver color except for a small flash of tick on his chest and toes. He was sure a great pointer and the best bird dog my dad ever hunted with. My dad loved to brag about Boss to anyone who would listen, even after Boss passed away from old age.
