We have chickens, so everyone gets a raw egg daily with breakfast. Some of my dogs won't eat the shells, but some love them. Puppies get a cooked egg daily until they are about four months, then I start cooking it less and less until it's raw. If you had a dog that needed to be on a lower protein diet, eggs may not be good for them, or if they had allergies, etc. like said above.

Dogs are at the same risk as people who eat raw eggs. Salmonella enteritis. There are also bacteria on the shell which even if taken off, can be absorbed into the egg. I don't see the reason for giving it, but if you're going to do it anyway, keep a good eye on their stools and for any signs of abdominal cramps.

my dogs both get raw eggs, shell and all, a couple times a week. raw eggs are the highest quality protein available. you can give them cooked if you're more comfortable with that.
in a healthy dog with a normal immune system, salmonella isn't much of a concern. |

I live on a farm. My dogs eat horse droppings, cow droppings, cat droppings, chicken droppings... I don't give them "free access" to these to just graze on, but they do get the chance to eat from the "Icky-Cafe" quite regularly. If they can handle the bacteria in all the various feces they eat, they certainly should be able to handle what they get in an egg.
That being said, we did have one year when we had ducks and geese, and a subsequent $3,500.00 vet bill. I had dog after dog get giardia and coccidia and campylobactor. I had one dog get a serious secondary infection from one of the above, or something else, who needed crate rest for six months - it was a long six months and several times I considered putting said dog down. But she recovered. We got rid of the ducks and geese, and have had not one bout of anything gastrointestinal since.... |

Ducks and geese are the dirtiest of birds and carry bacterium like crazy in them. Most of those bacterium make young dogs sick, and I had two puppies at the time. Both of them had to be rushed to the vet after hours and stay overnight more than once on a few separate occassions. They were VERY sick. And typically, with giardia, if one dog has it, the others have it too, even if they aren't showing symptoms. So all six dogs had to be treated, then bathed - it was November in Saskatchewan, so winter time. The vet offered me his calf barn to bath our livestock protection dogs (we had two at the time)....
