Question Rapid Breathing?

Last night when my dog was put in his crate for bed, we noticed that he was breathing rapidly and shallow. After a few minutes, we got up, gave him a little bit of water, and put him back in his crate. He seemed fine. This happened again this morning before we left for work. We did the same thing, and again he seemed fine.

We took him to the vet on Saturday because his incision from when he was neutered (almost 2 weeks ago) has formed a small infection. The vet gave him some antibiotics. Could these two things be related? Why is he breathing like this? We're a little concerned.

Only a reliable Vet. would know for certain, but I'd sure be taking him to one and have that checked out. I've heard of all sorts of things going wrong with dogs after they have been neutered.

is he panting? Yeah, I'd call the vet and have him checked out. Never know if it's the infection or antibiotics he may be sensitive to or something totally unrelated.

It's not really panting, its just quick shallow breathing when he's lying down in his crate. We're gonna keep an eye on it, and if it keeps up today, we'll take him into the vet tonight.

it could be related if the infection is causing him to run a slight fever (common with infections). I wouldn't worry right now since he's just started his antibiotics, but would mention it to the vet if it continues.

It is something that I would be concerned about regardless whether he's just started antibiotics or been on them for some time. His breathing may be an indication of reaction to his medication and his vet should be notified. jmo

Question Update

I called the vet & talked to her today and she seems to think that it's the beginning of some sort of seperation anxiety. Does this make sense to anyone else? She suggested giving him 2 benadryl (sp?) one hour before he goes to bed or before we leave for work to calm him down. Anyone hear of anything like this?

Yes, it could happen; some cases start up after visits at the vets. A reaction to medication does not present itself as a brief increase in respiration rate for a few moments only at night in their crate.

Another Update.....

Well, the rapid breathing stopped. He did not do it last night when he went into his crate & nothing this morning either. I'm not sure what it was all about, but he seems to be back to normal. We didn't give him any of the benedryll (sp?) and it went away anyways. Thanks for everyones help.
