Balding on HIND LEGS! HELP!

I have a 6 month old westie pup and I recently started noticing that his hair on the front of his hind legs and the front of his hind feet is becoming scarce and he is beginning to look bald. Is this normal? Why is my little boy going bald?? Also if you look at where the skin is beginning to show through you can see white spots on his skin. THank you!!balding-hind-legs-help-scoutleg.jpg

I'm no Vet. but it looks just like a food allergy. What kind of food do you feed him? I would go with either home cooked (which is the very best) or a premium kibble that does not have grains, by-products, meals and such which is garbage and just fillers. The first three ingredients listed on pet foods are the main ingredients.

Thanks for the reply!
The breeder had him on Eukanuba puppy chiots so we kepts him on that for the first few months but changed it to the eukanuba natural lamb and rice formula, the first 3 ingredients are lamb, brewers rice, and corn meal (which made his poo poos much more solid and less stinky).

The corn meal could be whats doing it if it is allergies. I would try cutting out any dog food with corn in the ingredients. You might also want to swing by the vets office and get their opinion just to be safe!
Good luck and let us know how it goes!

It actually looks like flea dermatitis to me...not a food allergy. Do you have him on a flea preventative? Most of the time when a dog has FD, the hair on the back of their legs goes bald...def. take him to a vet!

Being that you are not really sure have you considered consulting a vet? It might be a wise move...it's so hard for us to tell just by pictures.JMO

yes, I am planning on taking him to the vet, he is scheduled to be neutered next tuesday so I was going to wait until then to ask the vet to take a look at it.
We used the flea preventative, Advantage, about 3 weeks ago but noticed that he had fleas on him about 1 week ago, we are currently using Adams flea and tick spray until we get another dose of a different kind of flea preventative, we were thinking of k-9 Advantix and hoping it would work better (but I am not sure since they are both made by the same company) I would have already put another dose on him but when my grandmother did that with her Lhasa Apsa it made her sick.

If that's not killing the fleas you could always use a capstar pill....that kills them within 12-24 hours.

Capstar

Do you get the Cap Star pill at the local petsmart or from your vet? After researching dry dog food yesterday we decided to go with Ole Roy in the yellow bag, I am only kidding , although my boyfriends dad was trying to convince me that it is the best. but we did choose Solid Gold for puppies. Has anyone heard anything on this pet food. I read some really great things about it and wanted any feedback you all had to offer.
Thanks!
Have a GREAT day!

Which one....Ol Roy or Solid Gold? Ol roy is about the worst dog food on the market--seriously! Solid Gold on the other hand is a great food, but my pup wouldn't eat it (but he is also super-picky). As far as Cap Star goes....I THINK you can get it at petsmart, but I know you can get it at the vet.

Why would anyone want to put chemicls on or in their pets to deter fleas when there are so many all natural things that work and without harming the pet. I'm sure some of those harsh products are just adding to the cancer, liver & kidney disease, along with other major health problems.

Flea Preventative

I am interested in using a natural flea preventative if it actually works but if they did I am sure they would be more well known. I am interested in trying one if you have a recommendation but do your dogs play outside much? We live in Texas and fleas, ticks and mosquito's are an every day occurence.

LOL...I almost fell out when you said you were getting Old Roy....then I read the "just kidding" and had to laugh! Good one...you sure got me! LOL

I would say talk extensively with your vet and if he/she is any count, they will give you good info on natural preventatives.....or try to sell you their stuff.
