I was wondering if there is a way you can tell if your dog has arthritis? I dont know much about any of this, but my mom's dog is not jumping up on the porch anymore and is going really slow getting up the steps, if she even tries. We think she will be 10 years old this summer.
She had problems last summer though getting little stickers in her feet that we couldnt get out. But she is not holding her feet up when she walks. We just wonder if this could be arthritis? |

What breed is she? 10 is considered senior in the large breeds and some do slow down quite a bit. Of course some of the smaller ones slow at that age as well, and I think it's mainly due to poor diet for years. Arthritis is difficult to diagnose without x-ray. Looks like a Vet. visit is in order now.

Always room for one more

It could be, but she definitely needs to see a vet. Arthritis is very manageable, and the quicker she's started on treatment the better. My previous doggie (a Springer Spaniel/Border Collie X) developed it when he was getting up there in age, and a chondrotin/glucosamine (sp?) tablet worked WONDERS for him.

My mom is pretty sure it is stickers in her feet now cuz today she was rolling in the grass and when she got up she yelped and then was holding up her back foot. She is going slow up the porch, but she will jump off of it.

You could always start her on a glucosamine and chondrotin supplement if you wanted to. It can't hurt and it works best if started before arthritis kicks in anyway. True, those little sticker things are a pain in the butt
![]() Tick borne diseases can also affect their gait. |
