Loss of one dog

I'm new and just posted on the intro board and also the lost pet board.

Tuesday my beloved Sugar was put to sleep due to cancer and a hard surgery. She was almost 12 but it still hurts so much since she was so alert and playful the night I saw her. She lived with my parents since I have moved out.

My question is though is about our other dog. He is a rat terrier, two years old and not very loving towards other dogs. He only was nice to our other dog Sugar, an austrilian shepard mix.

My parents said that since Sugar has been gone, he(the rat terrier) has been acting strange. He has been looking for Sugar constintley and will only lay on my parents' laps. They said he seems to just be freaking out at times and just seems confused.

I saw our lil guy today and he seems a bit more playful. Has anyone been in this situation with your dogs? Is there anything I or my parents can do for him?

Thank you so much. I just want to help him out.

I truly feel that our furpals also go through a grieving process when they lose of one of their housemates whether fur or skin.

Over the years we have usually been a multi-pet household and I have seen it myself. Some have been somewhat subdued for a week or so and in one case I had one dog who was quite a challenge to get to eat or play. Since their pal is no longer there to play with it seems that they direct more attention our way. I also think they react to the sorrow we are feeling.

Giving him some additional attention and playtime will help him adjust and will also help you & your parents at this sad time. Hugs to all of you!

Animals grieve in their own way, but grieve they do! Fact is, if your dog has a favorite toy or blankie, and it gets lost or thrown away, they can sometimes stop eating for a couple days and just mope around.

Thanks for the advice. I went to my parents and saw him today. He seems to be doing a lot better and he sure did enjoy the treat I brought him

He is probably mourning the loss of his companion. I truly believe they mourn as we would....he will simply need a little more tlc for now!
