Another Tick post

Now Let me start off by saying I AM NOT a girly girl..that being said. I was petting Shamous the other night and started to stroke his ears and FELT something. it was the size of a big raisin. I KNEW immediately what it was with out even looking. here is the issue..Itouched IT!!!!!!!!Eeeewwwwwww!!! I think I have to amputate my arm now!!! Fleas no sweat, but big bulbous ticks.....gak!!! i made my husband yank it out cause I wouldn't go near it. He was laughing his butt off at me and tried to teach me how to do it. He couldn't believe I have had dogs all my life and NEVER pulled off a tick. My response..why would I when someone else would.? i also told him if Shamous picks up another one I don't care if 's as big as his head i am NOT touching it. (shivers thinking about it.)

What is the proper way to remove them?

I've heard that if you put a hot match on them they will let go of the dog? Is this true.

Others have told me you have to use needle nose tweezers and grab their heads

Others have told me to use tweezers and break their backs then they will let go.

I am so confused!!

mrsgrubby - From everything I have read they say just grab the tick as close to the skin as possible, w/ tweezers, and gently pull. You might need to open a bit of the skin depending how well it is on there. They all advise against the old urban legends that you mentioned.

Ticks are nasty you have the right to freak out, esp if you did not know it was there and touched it...

With your fingers, or tweezers, grab as close to the skin as possible and pull out. The key is getting out the entire thing (head and all).

I've never tried it, but then I have longhaired dogs. I do know that once off the dog, if you burn them, they expload < POP! >

Grab in front of their head, not just the head.

NO, don't break them. They don't have "backs" to break. Don't break them still attached, don't squeeze the "full" part (I know.... EWWWW). Just grab close to the skin (heck, to be safe, I actually grab the skin a touch), then pull straight out.

Don't break them or squeeze them because you don't want any of the fluid they have already consumed re-entering the dog.

I watched the Vet. tec. on animal planet use what looked like a very long half moon shaped tweezer looking thing and pulled the ticks off, but I couldn't tell how close to the head she got. The ticks head is actually burried into the skin, and if you don't get it out, it will cause an infection. NASY things those ticks!!

Even though I have managed to escape removing them I do know 2 things...1) you will hear a snapping sound if you get the head out when you pull it out manually.
2) a better option for me: ticks breath through thier rears when they are feeding. Splop (yes that is the technical word for it) some vaseline or some sort of ointment over it. The tick will pull its head out on its own, trying to breath. Then you can remove it with a tissue. Or in my case a hazmat suit, those big leather gloves that falcon trainers wear, a gas mask and entire roll of paper towels.
