Question Tazer's anal glands

Hi everyone,

Tazer is 17 months old and had problems with his anal glands..........he had an absess and needed the glands expressed. My question is.......the vet thinks i should get them expressed every three months at the vet....when i get my dog groomed she expresses his glands every two months.......do you think i should go to the vet also.........so far there has been no problems........any suggestions?

I'm just wondering if your groomer is able to get them competely empty. The reason I am asking is that if they are not completely express when the groomer does it , they will in time fill up again and cause problems.
My groomer does them as well but if I should happen to see the vet for other reasons I ask that they do his anal glands as well.

Hi Jacquie!
What breed of dog is Tazer? IMO, if he is having his glands expressed by the groomer, he really shouldn't need it done at any other time, IF, he is on a diet that had enough fiber to help him naturally express his glands. What are you currently feeding him? Perhaps adding some additional fiber to his diet to firm his bowel movements would help. Not to be disgusting, but when a firm enough stool is expressed through the anus, the glands should be squeezed enough naturally and express normally. Many dogs are on a food that simply produces too loose of a stool, the anus is not "worked" and the glands are not expressed.

Maybe your vet can show you how to do it yourself. It is digusting but I do our poodle's myself. It isn't hard once you know how.

Yes, Canned pumpkin works very well, as do green beans, sweet potato and spinach in my experience.
