Neosporin?
Was wondering if I can use it on Spatz's stiches from her spay. I was thinking of the "Pain reliever" kind, but don't want to use it if its not good.
Also, can I use a Benedryl cream on her "razor burn" where they shaved her belly? I know those prickly hairs growing back are uncomfortable, and I noticed she has razor burn..... Any ideas? |

Just my opinion here..... Your really better off to leave the incision area dry.
As for the razor burn, yep I'd do it and have but just be careful not to get near the incision area. I usually use an unscented aftershave cream. |

I've used Polysporin on Tysa before and it was fine. When she got those stitches after the cut at Petsmart. The vet said it was fine to use. I've used it a few times on little scratches and scrapes form the dogs being clumsy as well.
Not sure about the Benadryl cream though. |

I've used Neosporin, but they just lick it off for the most part...
I really like colloidal silver spray. It's not for pain relief, but in my experience it sure speeds the healing. You can pick it up at most health food stores. It's silver in water... kind of amazing stuff. It's also a natural antibiotic. |

hhhmmm, I'll have to find a health food store around here somewhere! LOL Sounds like great stuff to have on hand. Thanx Novel!
Just an FYI.....I decided to let Spatz mingle with the others for a bit, and she is on the couch.....Elite is GUARDING her from the others! LOL She (Elite) is such a good girl, not letting Max or Boscoe get "sniffy" and rough, or stress Spatz out. *sheds small tear of pride* |

LOL ) A friend of ours made some up for us and I was pretty skeptical till I actually tried it.As for neosporin on spay stitches...have nursed many fosters through spay surgery I would probably let it be. Our vet usually gives some oral pain meds for the first couple days after surgery. I agree with Crossfire: keeping it clean and dry is the way to go with an incision like a spay. I don't like to use neosporin on any area they are likely to lick it off. It's probably fine in small amounts, but why risk it if it's avoidable. After the first few days of surgery I wouldn't want to use any pain killer type of med. If the dog is licking or showing pain in the spay area I definitely want to know about it. Discomfort can be the first sign of infection. Generally speaking the stitches shouldn't bother them unless there's a problem. |

Very true, depending on where the neosporin is put, they will lick it off. Luckily the places I've had to use it have been in "no lick" zones, or very hard to reach ones at the very least.

My vet told me NOT to use neaosprin because it has steroydes (spelled wrong) in it. My advice...call your vet to check!

Neosporin Pain Relief, which is a different product, may have steroids. Steroids are used in anti-itch products such as Cortaid. |
