raw hide bones

Hello. I have a daschsund and have been feeding her a raw hide chip everyday. I have noticed that she seems to be getting a little fatter. She is already 17lbs and should be 12lbs. Does anyone know if rawhide bones will make my dog fatter than what she already is?

Rawhide isn't a hugely great idea. Rawhide isn't really meant to be EATEN...it's meant to be chewed on. Rawhide is not digestible in large quanities. It could even cause a blockage should your dog swallow too large of a piece. I'm not aware of it's calorie/fat content...I don't allow the stuff...period.

I like the potato based bones.

I wouldn't feed them every day....maybe every week or every two weeks or something like that.

Yup....rawhide can cause a blockage and a chip off of a pigs ear almost killed my small dog. I don't recommend any of that stuff...I use Nyla bones with those little nubs on them. The dogs love 'em. Or greenies.

Also Salmonella bacteria is often present especially if the rawhide comes from outside the US. Another problem is arsenic used as a preservative.

I never give rawhide or pig ears....too much risk for choking along with everything else. I always figure why take the chance when there are sooooo many other things more safe they can chew on.

on a side note (no, i wouldnt feed the rawhide, yes it can make her fat among other things) - a dog that is almost 5 lbs overweight when they should only be a 12 lb dog is bordering on obese, IMO. i would seriously start exercising, cutting back on the treats and food, and get the dog back in shape!

I give my dog rawhide on a regular basis, but he doesn't eat it, he just chews it up. I would be concerned if he ate a considerable amount of it

I have a dachshund too and I never give her rawhides anymore. I used to as a puppy but she would pull off big pieces and choke on them. I hope you can get your doxie's weight down soon. Dachshunds should never be over weight because of back problems and spinal injuries. It's probably only a matter of time before your little girl slips a disc or worse. My vet told me my dog was 1 pound over weight and asked me to put her on a little diet and more exercise. You might think 1 pound isn't very much and why bother but on a mini dachshund that is 10% of her body weight and it makes a big difference on her back and spine.

Thank you all for your responses. I have stopped feeding her the rawhide chips. I didn't realize that they were so bad for her. She has been very unhappy about it, standing in the kitchen crying for me to give her one. I will look for something that is safer for her to chew on and will keep her from getting fatter.

Yes, rawhide bones are full of fat and it's not all that healthy for your dog to be digesting them.
