diarrhea; please help
Hi everyone,
I just got my new puppy from the humane society. His name is Rocky and he is 6 1/2 weeks old. He is a heeler/something mix. His first stool was normal but since then he has had 3 soft stools and about 4 times he has had diarrhea. I am very concerned because I can not bring him to the vet untill monday. He has also been coughing and sneezing. He sleeps a lot but that may just be becasue hes a pup. Im not sure if the switch in food is causing this but I am feeding him purina puppy chow. He has his appetite still which I assume is good. He was just sleeping and started to shake. I woke him up and he seems ok but it worries me even more. Any information and advice would be very greatly appreciated. Thank you |

That is surprising that he was adopted out already. I wouldn't want to wait to seek veterinary help either. Has the color of his stools change at all? What food was he on before? If the diarrhea continues, I'd be inclined to withhold dog food awhile and give chicken and rice instead. Hope the little guy will be ok. Please keep us posted.

The coughing and sneezing is something that concerns me greatly. Is it a deep cough? Does he have disharge from his nose or eyes? If so, he definitely needs to see the vet ASAP. Yes, sleeping alot is normal for a puppy, but it's also normal for a sick puppy too! When he's awake, you say he's normal? Besides the diarrhea and coughing? The shaking could be normal while sleeping. Is he shivering, as in, he is cold?? Give him lots of blankies to snuggle into. Puppies have a hard time staying warm when this young. But he could also be dreaming, or just normal movement from immature nerves forming mature synapses in the nervous system. Finally, don't stop feeding him. Puppies need to be fed at least three times a day, because they do not have enough resources to survive without constant food. This is another reason a vet visit is definitely necessary. Puppies can die easily from dehydration, weakness and succumb to so many diseases adults would have no problem with. If you are concerned about his health, and you can not get to the vet, at least call one, or call the humane society. Someone will be able to help you, who knows a bit more about this dog than we do. |

agree with all. hopefully its just the food change, new home, etc. as its stressful for the pup. lucy had diarrhea at first when we got her. she had worms right away & was treated with meds. heres the thread when she had her issues..now shes fine but definitly get her in so they can run all the tests as they are so young & fragile...

Thank you all so much for caring. I brought him in this morning and they did a fecal test which was neg for viral, so they think it is bacterial. They gave me two different meds for him and today his stool had some consistancy! Still very soft but better for sure. The vet said the same thing you all did about feeding rice and chicken, but also added cottage cheese. Ill keep you updated and thanks for the opinion on the purina. Ill look into something better, the vet said he looks like he might be a heeler/st bernard so he might eat me out of house and home! Thanks again

So glad that he was able to be seen by the vet and is feeling better! I bet that's a huge load off of your shoulders!
heeler/St. bernard... Hmm, that's certainly an interesting mix! Would love to see pictures too! And actually, if you find the right food (better quality) he really won't eat as much as you think ![]() |

Glad your little one is doing better.
![]() Yep, a good food can work wonders and you'd be surprised at how little they eat if the food is excellent quality. My old saint I had years ago only ate two cups of food twice a day and was 175 pounds. ![]() |

Oh wow! He is a cutie!
I really don't see any heeler in him at all. I would say he's mostly St. Bernard X. There's some other breed I can see in him, but I can't put my finger on it. |

oh yeah, definitely st bernard... oh boy... You know, I've seen more and more shelters choosing the breed of their dogs as the smaller of the possible mix, so people don't get scared off. I really don't see much else but st bernard, but I agree Icey, there might be something.
Rick, he's 6.5 weeks in that pic?? He's gonna be huge! |
