300? 500? 1000? 2000?

I would save enough for you to afford. I haven't had to go for an emergency with a dog. But twice with 2 of my cats. One totalled $6000, for an extreme case of hepatic lipidosis. One totalled $3000 for FLUTD a common disease in male cats.
I have pet insurance that would give back a few hundred.
I would put away $4000, work up a good credit so you can also have one credit card, vet quotes usually double in 24 hours. $2000 will cover the first 48 hr with care, maybe a basic surgery, fluids, pain killers, etc.
They are my children so to find a limit is hard to say with me.

I understand exactly where your coming from. If your old enough to apply for one ( I have no idea how old you are )you could get a credit card and start working towards bringing up the limit then put it away for an emergency situation.

Something my daughter did ( her income is right about where yours is ) was to take out a loan at our credit union and stick it stright into her savings account, yes she had a monthly payment for awhile but she now has $5000.00 sitting in the bank just in case something were to happen to her dog. She not only has the funds now should it be needed but she also established credit with the bank which is always helpful for the future.

That's a good idea. And some vets do have payment plans.
