Went to see Winston today..his blood sugar was down to 200 which is good. His phospherus level is at 9..it should be at 6.5. If..and it is a big if..it comes down in the next day or so and STAYS down he will be able to come home. If the level does not come down and stay down the prognosis is not good..that would mean his kidneys are not functioning right and there will be nothing more we can do for him.

I picked Winston up at 6 pm yesterday. He is home for the weekend. YEAH!!!!He gets insulin every 12 hours. HE is a a canned dog food that helps kidney function. He is also on a pill to soothe his stomach as he has had blood in his stools. I took today off work so I could be home with him.
Have to take him in Monday morning. The vet will do more blood work to check his levels of phophorus. Hopefully, the levels will be lower. Keep praying!
Reggie is so happy he is home. She hadn't eaten much since he was gone. She just cried and snuggled him when we got home.
Thanks for all the prayers and support!! It is appreciated!

Well, it has been just over 2 weeks since Winston got so sick.
He is now on 5 units of insulin 2 times a day.
He saw the vet yesterday. His b.u.n. (kidney function) was good, phosphorus level a little high. He is now on a dry kidney function dog food. He is eating well and starting to drink more water which will help to keep his kidney function close to normal.
The vet told me yesterday that he was amazed at how well Winston is doing. He didn't think we would have to deal with Winston's diabetes, because he origanally thought Winston's kidneys would not be functioning and we would have to put him to sleep.
Winston is back to his old self. Trying to get Reggies food, luckily it is in a raised dish he cannot reach. He is jumping onto the couch again. It is so nice to have my little buddy back.
I also finally got them to give me a total bill yesterday..including the $100. for food, syringes, and insulin I got yesterday. the bill is just over $800. I can make payments..whatever I can afford. I am still amazed at the caring of this vet. I found out also that if there is an emergency at home he will come to the home to see the animal.
We are blessed.

What a relief, I'm sure!! I'm glad to hear the good news!! It sounds like your boy is getting back to his old self, and I'm sure the $800 is money well spent! Just to have him home is worth it!

Hugs to all of you, and we'll keep you in our thoughts and prayers for continued improvement.

I missed this somehow when your update was posted. I'm soooo glad that Winston is doing so well!!! Your vet is a saint for allowing you to not only make payments but for offering to come to your home in case of an emergency and bless you for caring enough about your boy to see this through!

*Hugs to Winston!*

I am so glad he is home and the news sounds good! I hope it stays that way! The updates have been great, had me worried there for a bit though.

Have a great Holiday!

Winston's glucouse level was over 700 again on Wed so he is up to 6units of vetsulin 2X a day. His kidneys are ok, not great but working. He has great cholesterol levels.
We now have to check his urine in the am--to see how high his glucouse level is. We are starting this tomorrow..it is my day off, so hubby gets to catch the 1st pee of the day He is really excited about this...not!
With Winston drinking so much water to keep his kidneys functioning and sugar levels down, he has been having ALOT of accidents. I am thinking doggy diapers for Christmas for the little buddy. I know he is not doing this to be a brat, only because he cannot hold it. HOpefully once we get his insulin level where it belongs the peeing so much will stop.
He is also back on the canned kidney function dog food. He will eat the dry kidney function, but only if it is mixed with the canned and water, and only if my hubby is home.
Hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year!!
