Hi, my name is Claudia and I'm new on the site. I have been searching for sites where I can gather information on my dogs symptons.
See.. I have a black Pom, who's name is lobo. But, since sunday night, he started having a dry cough. He hasn't been around other dogs for me to worry about kennel cough. I took him to the vet yesterday morning, monday, and the vet said that he looked fine, but told me to give him Robitussin Pediatric 1-5 ml every 8 hours. So I have, but as of today, i've noticed lobo's not his happy little self, he's sleeping alot more.... can this be because of the medication? Or maybe his little body his fighting off the cold.... i dunno... and i'm worried. Any ideas? |

Canine infectious tracheobronchitis (often called kennel cough) is thought to be caused by a variety of viruses, sometimes complicated by bacterial infection as well. It's common where many stressed dogs, especially young ones, are in close contact. It crops up in boarding kennels, animal shelters, grooming establishments, veterinary hospitals, dog shows and pet shops.
Antibiotics are not recommended in most cases, because the disease is viral. Often cough suppressants are used, but they do not help much and can have unpleasant side effects. The most effective thing to do is to place the dog in a steam-filled room (such as a bathroom with a tub full of hot water or after running a hot shower) or in a room with a cold-mist vaporizer. Veterinarians recognize this as a disease that just has to "run it's course" (two or three weeks) before recovery. If possible, isolate your dog, since some of these viruses may also affect cats and people. You can assist the healing process by putting your pet on a fast, giving vitamins, and using an herbal cough treatment. A liquid fast can be useful when the symptoms first appear and should be continued for three days. Reintroduce solid foods carefully and slowly. Vitamins help in several ways. Vitamin C is a good antiviral agent. Depending on the size of your dog, you can give 500 to 1,000 milligrams three thimes a day. Vitamin E stimulates the immune response. Give 50 to 100 IU of fresh d-alpha tocopherol from a capsule three times a day. Puncture the capsule and squeeze the oil right into the dog's mouth. Taper off requency at recovery. Vitamin A also boosts immunity, helps counteract stress, and strengthens the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract. Use 1/4 to 1 teaspoon of fresh cod-liver oil three times a day (depending on the animal's size) or give a 10,000 IU capsule of vitamin A once a day. Treat for a total of five days with vitamin A. |

when Harley had kennel cough, same idea as dry cough, Vet suggested benylin dm. Worked like a charm, but made him alittle less active due to medication... do not use it often

Your best bet would be to take him to the vets. It could be a simple cold or something more serious. Very few of us on here are vets, and even those that are would need to physically see your dog to correctly ID the illness.
Also with a vet you would get the correct medication and dosage so not to harm your dog. Medicating with human drugs with out vet guidance can harm your dog just as easily as it can cure him. |

more than likely its the Robitussin thats making your baby less active like everyone else said...it shouldnt be anything to worry about when it gets colder out little dogs are more prone to colds its good that you took him to the vet if you want something thats not going to make him drowsy ask your vet for Clavamox it will take care of the cold with out the side effects and you can get it in pill form or liquid. pill form is easier you dont have to worry about how many cc's to give him.

I agree with FWIJ and Shadow - I'd be straight back to the vet if he's not improving.
Hope he feels better soon. |
