I have a 3 year old rottweiler that for the past three heats, approximately a month after the fact, goes through what the vet says is a false pregnancy. She starts digging a huge hole in my yard, gets socks out of the laundry and hides them (in my house, I can't claim the the washer eats them ). Then....the worst of it is....she starts lactating. This time...she's started doing something different...she follows my rat terrier around licking her back frantically while (excuse the term)...air humping. It baffles me as to why this is happening to her. She's never had puppies before and think she'd love to have some of her own, but the vet says she has only fair to good hips and she shouldn't be bred unless we could find a male with excellent hips. On top of that.....I live in a townhouse and can only imagine puppies running around here. I do plan on getting her spade, and hope this will solve the issue. Is there anyone else that has had this problem? |

It sounds like her hormones are way out of whack thats for sure. It's always been my experience that when this occurs it only gets worse each cycle and the risks on pyo increase right along with it.
I have a girl now who started off that way and then began going in season about once every three weeks, out a week then back in and her levels were waaaaay out there. We attempted to work with it and even attempted hormone therapy since we had planned on keeping her in the show ring if possible (shes already pointed). ......... But, it's become enough of an issue where I feel her own health is at stake in the long run ( risks of anemia / pyo etc... ) and she's going in tomorrow morning to be spayed. I only hope that she makes it through the procedure ok. That for me is the bottom line, whats best for the dog and how to best prevent future issues that could even be fatal if allowed to occur. jmo |

I've had three female dogs through out my life, which have all had heats. None of them went through false pregnancies. There was only one time that they acted pretty funny after Sarge had tied with them (he was fixed, our fault that they got out together). They began nesting and collecting toys, but never went as far as lactating or getting bulgy. But it wasn't after every heat (they had atleast 3-4), only when Sarge had tied with them that one time (which was a mess having two females in heat at the same time!). |

Unfortunately the finances weren't there, but I'm now able to do it. Found out from the local Animal Assistance Legue that one of the local SPCA's does it a lot cheaper. I had also thought about breeding her until the vet told me what he did about her hips. I've already spent over $1000 on a cracked bursa in her front elbow from her rough playing (throwing front legs down with butt in the air).

Thanks Cross Fire.....I do have a smaller dog that did develop pyo....and it was very scary.....I was very lucky not to lose her. I was not aware of the illness but found out very quickly after paying almost $1000 on vet bills and emergency surgery. I'll be calling her vet tomorrow to find out when the best time would be after this false pregnancy again.

Thanks for all the responses....I like a couple of you....have another female dog that never went through what my rotti has. Her mammories are so swollen people ask if she has had puppies. Guess when she gets spayed I'll have to ask the vet if he does plastic surgery and get her a breast lift....lol....j/k.

glad you will be having her spayed. I can not believe she is comfortable having all these false pregnancies
