New to the forum + need advice
Hi folks, I hope you can provide some advice on the following.
I have a 16 month samoyed who was castrated 4 weeks ago. since the age of 4 months old Casper has been fully housetrained, however since his castration he seems unable to hold his toilet and is urinating every 2 hours in the house. Although I walk him for an hour in the morning and our dog walker walks him in the afternoon he seems to not being able to hold himself until she arrives + although he goes for a walk before bedtime he is unable to hold himself overnight. He has even started urinating infront of my wife. I have been to the vets and he gave us antibiotics in case it is a water infection but they haven't work, he has had blood and urine tests and they have all come back clear. The vet said this is normal behaviour in a recently castrated dogs but I read loads of websites and this is not mentioned. I am concerned it could be something more serious. or is this normal in castrated samoyeds. I would really appreciate your advice and whether we need to start leaving the potty pads down again for him to be re-housetrained (I do hope not). If anyone has had a similar situation then I would love to hear from you. Thank you for taking the time in reading this and I look forward to hearing your advice. p.s the purpose of the castration was because we were not going to breed him and didn't want him mating with other dogs accidently. Kindest regards, David St Martin & Casper. |

Welcome aboard!
I have heard of female dogs having what is called "Spay Incontinence", but I do not know if male dogs can get the same thing. Have you tried going to another vet to get a second opinon? Try asking your vet for bladder strengthening supplements. When my boxer/GSD was having urinating problems (he had kidney disease, and was urinating in his sleep), I was prescribed supplements to help strengthen his bladder. They worked very well and eliminated most of the "leaking". But maybe it is something to look into? |

I wanted to say welcome. I am sorry that I have no additional advice on your problem as I only have girl dogs and a girl cat.

Welcome!
I have had a very large number of animals altered, and have never had a male dog do that. I also agree with a second opinion. Does he drink a lot of water? Although diabetes is not extremely common, I personally have met three dogs with diabetes just at my vets office..Excess urination and excessive drinking are some of the signs. But he doesn't sound to have to other signs..So don't quote me. lol |

Welcome to GlobalPaw. I wish I could help you out with a suggestion. I think getting a second opinion is a good idea just to make sure nothing has been missed.

I am so sorry to hear this....... must be a complete nightmare for you and your wife. As the vet has covered all the tests and health checks (I am guessing, diabetes was among them). He has no infection etc... then perhaps it is behavioural?
Perhaps you could try getting in touch with a Samoyed rescue or breed club. They may have heard of this? Otherwise, he is young...... perhaps it's 'teenage angst'.......? But the above would probably be able to advise you. |

Hi David, welcome to Global Paw!
![]() I'm sorry to say that I can't offer any advice or support in regards to your concern. What I can say is that I congratulate you on neutering your dog - you made a great decision! . I definitely agree with what the others have said.. if possible I would highly recommend getting your dog checked out by another vet. I think it will be well worth it.I hope you enjoy being a member here! ![]() |

Is he just "dripping" or is it full blown urination? Is it when he gets excited, or just random? I agree with getting a second opinion....UTI, bladder infection, stones, etc. Heck, maybe even have a dye test done with x-rays to see if there is something going on with the soft tissue. But definitely a second opionion.

Welcome to GP. Sorry your dog is having these problems and I do think I'd find a holistic Vet. and go that route. I'm not big on medications unless it's really and truly the last possible and no other way out solution, because there are always other side effects that could be even worse. I do hope you find the problem with your big guy though.
