my dog eats poop

So my dog eats poop....alot. She eats her own and our other dogs and i have no idea why. Does anybody have a clue to why she does this? she gets enough to eat throughout the day. Will it hurt her at all? Help!

I read that is thought to be an inherited trait, and perhaps a learned trait. The puppies see the mother eating it to keep the area clean. My puppy is doing this. I have noticed that he poop's after eating so I stay close and pick it up before he can eat it.
My neice said the vet can prescribe something for the dog to eat that makes the poop unpleasent tasting. But I don't know anything about that yet concerning it's safety or possible negative side effects on the dogs health.

Most dogs do this at one time or another and some longer than others. You can give chopped alfalfa sprouts mixed with ground anis seeds or the liquid anis. Also Petedge sells an all natural product called deter.

It can also be caused by them having worms so try deworming.
Absolutely revolting habit they get isnt it
Puts a whole new complexion on the thought of a friendly doggy kiss

It just seems to be some weird habit that a lot of dogs have. When we got Abby (my Chihuahua) she used to eat her own poo, and we were all shocked because none of our previous dogs (including Harley) have ever done that. It is quite consoling to know that you're not alone! Some think that when a dog eats poo they are lacking in certain vitamins. I'm not really sure what the exact explination is, but I'm just glad that Abby's out of that habit!

I'm not sure how harmful it is for your dog to be eating her own poo, but I would discourage it and make sure it doesn't become a daily occurance. Next time you're at the vet I'd bring this up with them and see what they have to say about it.

Two of my dogs eat it too. I give them and my other dog tablets called STOP:

I don't think it's bad for their health unless they eat the poop of a dog that has worms.

It's not that they are lacking in any vitamin or mineral, in fact "they" don't even know why they do it. It's just another carry-over from their ancesters. The wild dogs eat the pups poop to keep the area clean so as not to attract predators

One of my dog does this too but she eats cat poo. It really gives her a nasty breath right after and is very disgusting!

But wolves poo (as well as urinate) around the boundary of their territory to mark it as a means to let other wolves know (as a warning), not to approach on their land. I'm not sure how your theory would fit into this.

Try mixing in a bit of canned pumpkin in her food.

The pumpkin may work. My dog was eating my other dog's poo so I fed the pumpkin to my other dog, so her poo wouldn't be so tasty to the poop eater. The best thing to do, is pick it up so they don't get a chance to eat it? My dog is especially bad in winter, when the hersey's are frozen in 3 ft of snow where I can't get to them?
