I was looking into Ruff Riders dog seat belts. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with them. And are they safer than crates? Kuchi has always riden in a crate and is comfortable in it.

The Ruff Riders seat belt does not look like it protects the dogs sternum. Here are some that look a lot better.

I think there are pros and cons to both for sure. A crate will keep you dog inside the car, but in a roll over accident or a hard crash, you dog will tumble all over inside the crate and can get hurt.
Most of the seat belts I have seen are not properly used by the owner, and in a crash the dog will not really be held tightly in place either. Violet always rides in a crate and Jasmine always in a seatbelt, but I deffinately see pros and cons with each |

The only two seatbelts approved to safety regulations are Champion CARE and Roadie (which I have and love). I love the way mine is made, and Roadie does have a padded front one, which I haven't needed.
A friend of mine is the "poster child" for Roadie. All 5 of her dogs were buckled into her vehicle during a rollover accident. If I recall correctly, the car rolled five times. She was the most injured. One dog broke a toe. If the dogs had been in plastic crates, they would have broken open, wire and the dogs would have been smashed in. That definitely secured my belief in dog seat belts, and quality ones at that. I vote for the roadie. |

If I didn't have more dogs than seatbelts the Roadie would be my choice over their crates.

The other thing I like is if you have the latch system in your car, you can have people and dogs... you can use a locking carabiner to attach the harness (not the D-ring, but the loop you run the seat belt through) to the latch clip.
I have a Corolla and can really only hold my two dogs comfortably. I COULD put a person in the back too, but it might not be the most comfortable. |
