Exclamation Puppy not pooping!! HELP

Hi,
I just got a 11 week old maltese puppy about a week and a half ago. When we first brought him home he had trouble going #2. He would squat and push and nothing would come out..finally after a couple hours of trying he went. Over the past week he only goes once a day if he goes at all and he might only get a tiny little bit out at a time. Last friday he didn't go at all and all day saturday he was trying to go and couldn't until later that afternoon. I'm really worried about him. We have been giving him some Karo syrup like the vet instructed but it's really helping. I'm hoping it could be the adjustment to the new food (purina pro plan w/ chicken) Any help or advice would be great. I'm just worried.

Firstly I'd let your vet know that what they suggested isn't working and secondly I'd switch foods. Purina is terrible.
We have a great thread here about choosing a good commercial dog food that you should read http://www.globalpaw.com/dog-health-...food-fido.html it's very helpful.

Other than that I'm not much help, sorry. I'm sure others will have better advice.

Cass.

I'd be pretty concerned...a pup that age should be a poop machine! And like cass suggested, please switch foods. check out that thread, and your learn what to look for in a high quality food. I made the same mistake too when I first started out. It's easy to get suckered into the advertisements and name of a company. So anyway, I'd make an appt with the vet for sure.

HI and welcome to GP. So glad you could join us, but am sorry your baby is off to a rough start. It's easily corrected with the proper diet and exercise. First off Purina is horrible stuff and so is Science Diet, so don't let a Vet. talk you into whatever they are selling.
I'd put that baby on some ground lamb and rice, with some grated carrots thrown in.

I'd contact your vet again, see what else you could try. Is your pup drinking enough water?

If the food is so bad, wouldn't the pup be pooping more? I've read here on another thread that if you feed high quality food you'll get less poop and firmer stools.

I agree, this is really something you need to discuss with your vet as it may be a more serious issue than can be seen from the outside and your vet needs to know that the Karo isn't working correctly.

At this point I wouldn't recommend doing any type of food changing, it could easily make matters worse at this point and would discuss the option with the vet as well.

Well we were feeding him pedigree puppy food but my dad said the breeder him and my mom got their yorkie from said purina was the best because it didn't have corn in it and b/c dogs don't digest corn. So thats why we switched.

your probably right Crossfire...now isn't the time to do a food switch. if the little pup is sick, that'd just add more stress to his tiny body.

I think the good food=little poops is true to an extent, because Trixie's poops were HUGE when she was on Innova. I was feeding the correct dose for her age/weight and all, but she had MOUNDS! hehehe...her poops became substantially smaller after I switched to Verus. A high quality food, but not quite as good as Innova.

yes I don't want to switch foods now with the state hes in. He doesn't seem to be bothered with it he plays and runs around like normal. When he has to go he will push push push for however long it takes to get it out. I have asked my boyfriends friend who works for my vet and he doesn't seem to concerned with it, but its worrying me to death. I'm probably going to end up taking him for an xray of his intestines to make sure there isn't a blockage .

Take him to a vet straight away. Better to be safe than sorry.

I would certainly take him to the vet asap
Drinking helps them to poop, does he drink much?
Changing a diet when a dog is constipated already can make the problem worse

well we went to the vet and he tested possitive for coccidia. If only that had showed up during the first vet visit She gave me albon to give him for a couple weeks (1/2 a pill every day) When I got home I researched a little bit about the parasite and saw that it usually causes diarrhea but he has the opposite. He has a real difficult time pooping. He finally got all of what was in him out today. Thank goodness but i'm scared he's just gonna get backed up again. Has anybody ever hear of a dog getting constipation from coccidia???
