Hi,
I just got my maltese baby boy a couple of weeks ago. Right away we noticed he had a difficult time pooping, and wouldn't go but about once a day. (when i say difficult I mean painful to even watch him) i took him to the vet within the first few days and he had a stool sample check and no parasites (or so we thought) well he continued to have problems pooping so yesterday I took him to a different vet and he had another stool sample and tested positive for coccidia. Now she put him on Albon for two weeks. She said it should help clear everything up. When I got home I did some research about coccidia and everything I could find about it said it causes diarrhea not constipation ....has anybody ever heard of puppies with this particular parasite having constipation?? I just hope this will do the trick and put him back to normal when it comes to doing #2 |

I've never heard of coccidia causing constipation. Even if the breeder knew the pup had it, I cannot think of anything to give a dog to constipate it for two entire weeks.
Have you tried to add a bit of canned pumpkin to his food? Not the actual pie filling with the spices in it, but the plain canned pumpkin. I would think for a Maltese a teaspoon per feeding might be enough. Pumpkin is a wonderful thing. It can loosen up constipated dogs, and it can firm up dogs with runny poop (not caused by illness). |

My experiences with coccidia is loose stools, refusal to eat, and a generally upset dog. I've never heard of constipation. The Albion iteself though may cause looser stools though so would help, but. in a round about way that I would not like.
I agree with Spiritus and the canned pumpkin. Works miracles! |

Well the vet must know what she's doing...yesterday he pooped twice with no trouble what soever and it only took one push to get everything out (a small thing I know ) but when your not used to seeing your puppy ever poop with ease ESPECIALLY not twice in one day its a huge relief. I thought he was a pretty happy pup before but yesterday he ran about 20 laps around the coffee table jumping over my legs each time around haha it was so cute.
