ques about itching back tail
Here's the scenario - a week ago, we got a springer that we are fostering. He's a great dog, but when picked up at the shelter, he had a tapeworm which was treated 36 hours before we got him, and he is over that. So, today, he has been licking around his tail, and hind quarters. What is going on? I'm thinking it's fleas, but tried a flea comb on him, and nothing showed up, then I put him on a white sheet and brushed him to see is any flea dirt came out, and there was none. I have some K9 advantix treatment for fleas. Should I put some on him?

I agree, could be anals, or... the tapeworm as it is expelled may be causing his anus to itch. If it continues, or gets worse, I'd see the vet, but I wouldn't treat for fleas, although tapeworms are carried by fleas, I would be careful about over medicating him while he's still a little weak from the parasite.

He has a sore on top of back hindquarter that he licks, then he licks around the base of the tail and the anus. I'm taking him in tomorrow for a check, anyway. I think maybe it is anal sacs. I will let you all know. Thanks abunch for the help.

If the anal sacks are full, you can feel the little lumps on both sides of the rectom. I wouldn't be putting any flea medication on him anyway, not to mention they are supposed to have a heartworm test before starting that type of medication because it is some nasty stuff and can cause serious health problems like heart, liver and kidney disease, cancer and more. Too many all natural products you can use to keep fleas off without useing harsh chemicles.
I hope some relief is found for this poor boy. |
