Starving puppy runt; what do I feed him?

Please If you know what to do answer back to my plea's for help. I have a puppy that does not have the strength to fight to get fed by the mother so he is starving. This puppy is able to suck a little so at first I used milk with water mix, dipped the corner of a washcloth and he sucked on that, my son went to the store and bought a baby bottle, and now we are using that but I wonder if the milk is nutritious enough. He has shown a little better signs of life since I have done this like (louder moaning & grunts) but he is still very weak. Thanks to everyone who responds.

What kind of milk are you feeding him? Do NOT feed him cow milk. You need to buy mother's milk fomular from the store or goat's milk.

If that were my puppy, I would remove ALL the other puppies and let this puppy nurse alone and have as much as he can eat before you put the others back.

If you need to supplement, supplement the BIGGEST puppies, and let the smaller ones have mom.

For weak puppies, talk to your vet, tube feeding is much more efficient and uses lots less of the puppy's strength.

Also see the Goat Milk thread for a home made formula that works.

you should be able to get suppliment milk from the pet store. it's, well, it used to be called b*tch's milk when I was younger and hand-fed a runt I rescued from under my great-uncle's house. What I did to get her strong enough to survive nursing was, made the mother lay there and let the puppy nurse. I did that several days, which did not endear me to my uncle. It was his opinion that the dog was too weak to survive and should die. I disagreed and was sent home, with unweaned puppy. I hand-fed her

The milk smells exactly like "puppy breath".

In doing a websearch just now, I found Esbilac Goats Milk and Just Born Puppy Milk Replacer to name a few

i think i would do as Redyre suggested. The best milk for any pup is its mums milk.
Can you put the little one to the mother first before the others???
This way it gets milk easier and it is the most neutrient

I completely agree with Redyre_Rottweilers! That baby needs moms milk. Let it have the mom all to itsels every three hours till it stops nursing and is full. You can buy bitches milk in the pet stores to suppliment the larger of those puppies.

I totally agree put puppy back on mom- I had to do this with a couple in my litter- ment no sleep really for me cause I was up every 2-3 hours to put pup on and just hold them there. If pup is able to nurse this is the best way to feed the pup. All I did was take mom to and pup out of nest box and sat with them- worked like a charm Best of luck
