We found out on Wednesday that our puppy has parvo.
He has been receiving constant vet care, since then. We have been giving sub-Q liquids at home as well. I am wondering if anyone has any words of advice on how to help him recover. And how long it will take him to start bouncing back. |

UPDATE!
Duke is doing much better, he is drinking on his own again, and also beginning to be interested in food! There is no more diarrhea and the vomiting has ceased! I know that we are not out of the woods yet, but this is a huge improvement! I have had him in the bathroom, since it is easier to keep sanitized, I was awoken to the sound of Duke whining to get out of the bathroom this morning! What an exciting day! Thanks for the words of wisdom and the prayers, I know that they have helped immensely! I will keep posting to let you all know how things are progressing! |

Hello! I'm so sorry to hear that your puppy has parvo. We got our puppy at 11 weeks, and he had parvo. It was the worst thing in the world for us. Our puppy, Jack had parvo for about three weeks, and we were constanly taking him to the vet. He wouldn't eat or drink and became very weak. Our Vets told us to get him some water with electrolights, and feed it to him with a eye droper as well as baby pedialight. Jack survived, and now has such a strong immune system, he's a healthly wonderful dog. Good luck! Let me know if you have any questions. I'm quite an expert now!

Parvo is a very serious disease that can be kept in the soil active for over a year. Sanitation is very important to prevent a further outbreak, and there can be cross contamination from older dogs to younger dogs, with the older dogs never getting ill or showing any clinical signs of illness.
But as has been said, with todays advances in medical care parvo can be treated succesfully with the mortality rate declining over the years but it is still a very serious deadly illness that is highly contagious. |

I hope you bleached the area that he was in. Parvo can live in an area for many months, which means that he can contract it again if not taken care of.
Bowls, carpets, floors, bedding, anything this puppy came in contact with MUST be disinfected |

Glad he is doing better! our dachshund Bob had parvo when he was a puppy, and almost died! Spent 10 days in the E-vet. (Spent $10,000 on him! He had a very severe case of it!). His immune system took a while to strengthen up. He ended up getting kennel cough from being at the vet for so long, AND mange. He also got an Upper Respiratory infection the same week.
Watch out for any illnesses, since their immune systems weaken a lot due to the parvo. |

ANOTHER UPDATE!
Duke is doing phenomenally well! He is almost back to being a puppy, other than he tires easily. He is still on antibiotics (Orbax) I have found that my homemade meatloaf is one of his favorite things to cover up the taste of the meds. Now, I have more questions I have cleaned my house pretty much from top to bottom and cleaned up outside. I have bleached everything that he came in contact with, and ny house now smells like a hospital. (LOL) I have heard contradicting stories about how long to keep him away from other dogs, does anyone know? I work at a kennel and all of the employees bring their dogs for play groups. I am really excited to take him, but I don't want anyone else to have to live through this nightmare. Also, I have heard two sides to another subject. I have heard that he cannot get parvo again for 3 years and from another source I have heard that he can get again. That is a scary thought, if he can.Again thank you all for your support and advice, it has really helped me keep my spirits up in this time of desperation! I am now smiling and sleeping again, just as Duke is ![]() |
