Eyes = Mirror to the soul

Well, when I had come home from the gym today and after Steven had left for work, I was laying in bed. Ike came up behind me, and wanted to come up. I let him up, and next thing I knew he starts heaving. I try to rush him out of my room (hopefully outside) before he threw up, and he made it just out of the hallway. Bile... okay, probably because they had not eaten breakfast today cause we had to go out and get another bag of food.
So I let him outside to relieve himself a little better. I go out to let him back inside, and he really doesn't want to come in -- which is odd. So he finally does. When my dad came home, he called me out and said Ike was acting like something on his rear end was bothering him. As time went on, he started rolling over onto his side and back, and litterally screaming. Then he'd go a bit without doing anything. But he was constantly pacing and panting. My dad couldn't stand it any longer, so we rushed him to the E-vet. My brother had to apply for the care credit, just in case, but he said it wouldn't be any different than if it were his credit card. So, they took him back to do X-rays. If nothing showed they would do blood work. She comes out with the Xrays, only to show us he has an obstruction. What is it? A rib bone. My family and I had gone out to eat Sunday at Ruby Tuesdays, and my parents wanted to bring the rib bones home. Well, I really didn't want to give them the bones in the first place. Only because with all of the research I have done, I don't want to give cooked bones anymore. Something inside of me just had this feeling. I honestly cannot explain it, but I really did not want to. They insisted and insisted I give them their treat. Well, looks like I should have stood my ground. So, to any of you who feed your leftover rib bones (or any cooked bones) to your dogs. Please don't. I've now had to learn the lesson a hard way. $3000 later, my brother is nearly in debt and we made Ike extremely sick. Just be very very careful guys with any type of treat, bone, or food item you give to them. Anything can happen, and at such unexpected moments. Please keep Ike in your thoughts that all goes well, and that he heals quickly. I will be picking him up in the morning. |

the care credit saved my Gracies life when she broke her leg. My daughter got it for me and it was 2300 vet bills. If you pay it off by 90 days theres no interest, my payments are about 68 a month. Its also good for other stuff too so when I get the vet bill paid off I'm going to get a new pair of glasses, something my insurance doesn't pay a whole lot on. I'm glad your little Ike is going to be ok, and I hope he heals quickly.

Poor Ike! I had such a hard time trying to tell my parents not to feed cooked bones to my sister's dog. Fortunately she was lucky in that she never had an obstruction though. I hope Ike gets better soon. Cass. |

I hope all is going to go well! Tell Ike to get feeling better soon, the poor boy. And I also hope you can get everything paid off without any problems...I know how much of a pain that can be.

I had to flip out on someone at the Memorial Day party I went to on Sunday. They were throwing Hank and Rocky (my friends' rottie/? and boxer/bull dog mutts) cooked chicken bones!!! I was like, "don't you know that can easily kill a dog! They can choke, get and obstruction, or tear up their insides, so please NEVER feed a dog cooked bones." I didn't really know the person, so I didn't care that I was pretty harsh, but Rocky was like my best buddy the whole day...he's only 6 months, but SOOO sweet and wouldn't stop following me around all day

I'm so sorry to hear what Ike went through, poor boy!
That definitely is a lesson learnt the hard way. I keep telling my mum and step-dad not to give the dogs cooked bones (they always give them cooked lamb bones). Once Harley actually got a bone stuck on his tooth, as the bone had split. |

Best wishes to Ike for a speedy recovery!!
My dog had an obstruction once from eating a tennis ball....it was a terrible experience to go through. So...I guess whoever fed Ike the rib bone gets to pay for the surgery? |

BIG hugs for Ike Icey - I hope the surgery goes well and he has a quick recovery.
Our family learnt the hard way about the dangers of feeding cooked bones - my grandparents gave their GSD a left over cooked chicken bone which she choked on and ended in her crossing the bridge (RIP Radar) |

Thanks a lot everyone. It was definetly upsetting.
The vet called last night and said she found the bone, which was wrapped up in a lot of grass (after he threw up, he was eating grass outside). She took that out, checked the rest of his GI tract, and found another sliver in his stomach. She went ahead and took that out. My guess is that he was throwing up to try and get out those pieces, and once he ate that grass, it wound up the bone and got it stuck. Poor guy ![]() I have to pick him up by 7:30 and then take him to our regular vet. He has to stay there all day, and no food/water for the first 24 hours. Thanks again for all of the well wishes. I will keep you all posted. Quote:

I am soooo sorry, that is horrible! We never give any form of bone, just because its better to be cautious.!
Care credit really helped us out. When Bob had to be hospitalized at the E-vet for 10 days, it came out to $10,000 total. (That was nearly two years ago), and my mom barely payed it off in January of this year. |
