HELP!!! Weimaraner puppy wont eat
Windy wont eat. I got Windy yesterday afternoon so she hasn't been with us 24 ours yet. But I'm so concerned. Do any of you have any experience with new Weim puppies. Is this normal. I am so worried about her.
Also she is so scared of us, running away, droopy face when we hold her as though she is very unhappy being held. But she is not scared of Tillie my 4 month old Schnauzer. However Tillie is very jealous. But I can handle that. Taking her to the vet later today for a check up. Please any puppy weim owners help me!!! |

I don't have any experience with Weims, but I'll try to help you the best I can.
I wouldn't worry that she's not eating yet, especially if she seems very insecure. A one day fast won't hurt her, but if she isn't eating still after two days or so, I'd begin to be concerned. Try feeding her in a quiet place where there isn't a lot of commotion going around, leave her by herself, and see if she'll eat. I know that some dogs at the boarding kennel won't eat until we leave for the night and all of the other dogs are asleep, and I also know that Rose won't eat if it is storming outside, because storms make her nervous. I don't really know anything about Weim puppies, but I've come into contact with a couple of adult Weims, and they've all seemed extreamly reserved. I would just let her get used to you slowly. I think in a day or two she'll be fine as long as you take it slowly with her. Try feeding her yummy treats (maybe some cut of chicken or ham) and just sitting on the floor letting her aproach you on her own time. My friend Karla also got one of the Aussie/Collie mixes from my friend, only she picked the shyest one in the litter (they were all shy seeing as how they've never been off of the farm before) because "she liked his markings". He litterally screamed when she put the leash on him and froze when he was being held in the car. When we got out at our school to go watch a soccor game, he tried to dash away into the woods and hide. (Chloe was walking calmly on a leash, looking out the window of the car, and when we got out of the car she pottied right away in the grass.) I talked to Karla two days after that and she said that Bandit was happy at home and was even playing with some toys. I'm afraid that he is going to be too much dog for her when he gets older (especially if she doesn't socialize him), but oh well. Windy probably wasn't socialized a lot while she was at the breeders house, so she is reserved with new people. It will just take some time for her to overcome that. I hoped that helped a little bit, and I'm sure some other people on here who have more experience with Weims can tell you a bit more. |

Hi Ritz Thank you so much. I have now on the couch wrapped in a blanket laying be side my DG. I soooooo appreciate your help!!!!
I meant to say in my first post that She did not eat supper last night either. That is one reason for my concern this morning. Now that being said. I am going to the vet to get her first checkup. She vomits when I placed puppy food in her mouth trying to encourage her to eat. We had sausage, eggs and biscuits last night for supper. So I tried to get her to eat some of the people food but NO she would not. Probably good anyway as I don't want to start her eating our food. After I posted I found this link and the weim puppy did not eat till the 3rd day. So this seems to be normal behavior for some dogs. Thanks again....I really appreciate all advise!!! |

You have to understand that every pup is different. The fact that you just got her she's still probably getting used to things. Let her come to you on her own. Encourage her and give her lots of lovin' when she does come by you. Weims LOVE to be near their people. If you have a chance when she's sleepy get her near you wrap her up in a blankie to keep her warm and just pet her. Right now she's a bit scared cause she's in a new place and she needs to explore a bit and get used to her surroundings. To give her people food to encourage her to eat isn't neccessarily bad, just make sure it's quality food and not junk like potato chips and stuff.
Good luck and if you do take her to the vet let us know if they found any problems. |

Instead of people food, you could also try some canned dog food to incourage her to eat a bit. That seems to work for some dogs.
I hope all goes well! ![]() |

Hello all. The vet said she is fine, but has worms. The vet said she used the same kind of wormer as the Breeder. So she said lets put her on a different kind. As for as her not eating she did finally eat a few bits this afternoon. We have to watch her close the Doc said if she starts to throw up blood get her there fast. But she too thought it was stress. So that's all better news.
I thank each and everyone. You all offered very good advise. |

Oh man isn't that the truth!! To the bathroom, waiting outside the shower, making dinner, watching tv, doing yard work, sleeping in bed, doing house work, eating dinner... you name it a weim never leaves your side! If they could get a piggy back ride all day to follow you closely I think they would. LOL! |
