I'd like to know what the owner is feeding as well.
I'm not sure how to treat the hot spots, but I'd take the dog to the vet so they can get some medicine for it. You can buy over the counter, but I had a Retriever/Chow mix who got them all of the time -- the OTC meds didn't do a thing for them. |

Hot spots are pretty common in my area as one of the side affects from a flea bite. I would recommend taking the dog to the vet to get a perscription, & eventually a good bath! Hot spots can get pretty smelly when the hair falls out & sticks to the oily residue from the skin where the area was infected.

Oh, okay. I remember oc_spirit mentioning that food a while back. Definetly a very good food.
If the peroxide seems to help, then I guess keep that up. But if they don't clear up I'd talk to the vet and see what can be done. |

I wouldn't use hydrogen peroxide on hot spots. Hydrogen peroxide will actually kill off healthy, new tissue that's growing. H2O2 should only be used for cleaning out fresh wounds. Even then I don't prefer to use it unless it's the only thing handy.
Of course, your friend will want to try to determine what's causing the hot spots. Though, sometimes it's just a little nick that the dog obsesses over and it grows into a hot spot (happened with our girl Harmony after a line burn from lure coursing)...or sometimes bored dogs will just obsessivly lick and create hot spots. A product I use on hot spots or other wounds I don't want the dog licking is EMT Spray. It will help the wound heal and also has a bittering agent that will deter licking. |

KennelMom...is that EMT spray available pretty much everywhere? Cuz it sounds like something I'd like to have readily available around the house. And...shelby has a teeny cut on her foot she keeps licking
