Thumbs down Oh, this is NOT good!

Belle just went into heat! Right when I have her spay appointment set this happens. My god. I've dealt with ONE dog in my life who has gone into heat- and no she didn't ever get pregnant. Belle WON'T either. You won't see me here saying oops she got pregnant. NOPE!

Argh. I really thought I would catch it BEFORE.

I am so annoyed by this.

*sigh*

personally, since I had a dog that had to take hormones because she was spayed too early and suffered from spay incontinence I am waiting till my baby does have her first heat to make sure she is totally and completely matured and that her body has all the growth hormones she needs to do this. I could go on but I won't.

That's the pits!! Whenever I get track dogs in, I can almost guarantee that the bitch with the first spay appt or home waiting will be the first and/or only one to go into heat LOL

I have a bitch that was spayed at almost 5 years old and still got spay incontinence. Most of our bitches were spayed at 2-3 years old - no matter how long you wait, there are changes in the dog's body that will occur due to the loss of hormones. Spay incontinence is one, though only one of ours has ever had it.

Thanks both of you for posting this about incontinence. I never heard of such a thing. I was going to get both of mine spayed next month @ the same time. Tillie my schnauzer is will be 5 months and Windy my weimaraner is 10 weeks old. I though you could spay them at any age.

Can you tell me if your dog had any side effects from the hormones? I ask because my spay incontinent dog had to be taken off PPA due to side effects. The vet wants to put her on estrogen but from the research I've done I'm not happy with what I'm reading about the hormones.

Don't you just adore that timing? LOL

Mine were all spayed at a later age. Sheiba was done at about 3 years, Denali at about 2 years. Only because we hadn't known much about spay/neutering. Not only that, Denali and Sheiba fought every time they came into heat, so we wanted to put a stop to that.

Denali is the only one who seems to "leak" a tiny bit every so often. But she starts to lick herself a lot, and starts do that. Then the next day she is fine.

They CAN be spayed at any age, but it really all depends on personal preference I think. Search for some threads on here on the topic of spay/neutering early. Some people prefer to do it before, some after, and some not till the dog is 1 year. The threads will contain links to various sites that give information about spay/neuter. So it really is all a personal preference. Do your research, and make the decision based on your own feelings.

Yup, just wonderful timing. *rolls eyes* I am going to talk to the vet tomorrow since that is the appointment. I have to get some other things done so I don't want to reschedule.

I am worried, but spaying is important to me.
