Ok, this is probably going to sound a bit gross, but I had to ask.
I've always heard and been told that mounting behavior is either due to play or dominance, unless a female is in heat, then it becomes a sexual act, mating. Well Tysa is now spayed, no heats, PJ has taken over as alpha, but PJ is still at this time intact. Once in a while, he still mounts Tysa, just during play. Well the last couple of times he's done this, he really gets going, I mean some serious thrusting, even though he's just pumping at the air above her, or on her back. But during this, he actually "releases", and sprays all over Tysa's back, or sometimes on the ground as he's hopping off of her. I know, not a pleasant picture. At first I thought this was probably just urine, but it's doesn't appear to be (in fact i'm sure of it), and after he does this, his lil fellas actually look drained, and shriveled (yes I know, gross). So if this is just from play or dominance, why is he....???.....well, you get the picture. Sorry for the oddball question, just a bit confused. |

Even though she is spayed, he still knows she is a female and basically he is just doing what comes natural to him! That definitely seems to be a sexual thing, not dominance at all.
Sophie is spayed and one of my friend's pit bull used to do the same thing to her until he got neutered a few months ago. I know, it's disturbing to watch.... Once he's neutered, it should stop after a month or two when the hormone level goes down. |

It's not so much that Tysa is female as it is that she is being used for his sexual gratification. It could be anything, a pillow, the couch, you name it but hes decided to use her instead.
Males as well as some females will do this regardless whether their fixed or not. It sounds like PJ's is brought on more however from the excitement of play. It will happen less often to not at all after being neutered. |

Aside from the two you mentioned to trigger mounting, there is one more, and more common actually. Anal glands, if full or impacted or even infected changes the "musk" odor of the dog. While not detected by us, to a dog it can be perceived as several things.
One is that the dog is alarmed or afraid or aggressive. The musk odor becomes confusing, and depending on the severity of the anal glands at the time, this can trigger a mount from another dog. In general- an infected gland or highly impacted, gives off the odor of aggression. When a dog is alerted to aggression, they secrete a musk- its similar in smell to an impacted anal gland. A full anal gland can give off the 'musk" of Fear.. A fearful dog can be deteremined as weaker- trigging another dog to possibly attack, or being fearful, the dog that has the full gland could be seen as attacking out of fear. While caring for the anal glands, as you can see, its not just for the health of your own dog, but also to prevent incidents from other dogs. Whether the dog is " scooting" on the floor or not, the fact is an anal gland can be infected without the "scooting " behavior, and in certain breeds prone to anal gland problems, should be checked monthly. Additionally- if you do not know how to properly clean out the anal glands, if not done properly, the dog can become bruised in the anal gland, or not emptied completely. If someone doesnt know how to do this, best left to a groomer or a vet to empty the sacs completely. |

Ok thanks you guys.
I am happy to say that this has never happened in the house! Whew! LOL And PJ will be neutered when I am able to do so, but unfortunately, things are a bit tight with money right now, after losing my job a few months ago because of having to be off for so long after my surgery and treatments last year. And with the unemployment rate in Windsor being as high as it is, finding another job is proving very difficult, and frustrating. And borzoimom, I'm sure that in this particular case, it has nothing to do with anal glands. Neither of my dogs have ever "scooted" before, or shown any signs that there is a problem with them emptying their anal glands naturally. On the few occasions this has happened, it's always after Tysa and PJ have been chasing their Cuz's around in the yard. It has been when they've ran back to me, Tysa will drop hers ready for her next toss, while PJ bounds over with the Cuz in his mouth, sorta pushes his face into hers in a playful gesture, which she usually ignores or backs away from as she's more interested me throwing her ball for her to go fetch. She'll gladly play this game with PJ if I'm inside, but as long as I'm out there with them, it's all about mummy and playing fetch. PJ may as well be invisible when she gets focused on some retrieve games. After so many times of PJ trying to get her to play, and getting no play back from Tysa, that's when he'll hop on her. Most of the time just telling him "off", he'll do so and run over and drop his toy for me to throw for him, but those odd occasions, once he's up on her, he just can't help himself. Ha, boys! Tysa seems pretty much unaffected by it as well, she just lets him do what he's gotta do, more of just a put out "hurry up man, I wanna chase my ball" look about her. |
