Wilson has a WEIRD rash!
My poor sweetheart has a strange rash that is in kind of blisters. It is all pretty dry but looks itchy. However, I do not see him going nuts about it or I would have noticed it sooner. It is mostly on his belly but appears to be into some fur areas too. Anyone know what this is? I can't get to the Vet before Thursday and I need to not FREAK out about my baby. He seems to be drinking alot but we just started adding some canned food to his dry... maybe this rash came with that? I can't say how long he has had it I just noticed it tonight. It appears it has been there a little while because of the dryness and crackiness.
Please help me solve this skin mystery! Please go to misspiggy180 and look at Wilson's Album called Wilson's Rash. They are very clear photos. Thanks fellow-dog-lovers. I appreciate any help you can give me. |

I never did find out exactly what Sammy's rash was, or where it came from, but it sounds like what he had. It's pretty common, and I think that it is allergies of some kind. The vet gave me antibiotics (1 week's worth) back in June, and that cleared it up. Then it came back, but not as bad as it was, so I gave him some benedryl that the vet had also given me. I would only give him 1 or 2 pills. He'd break out with only 1 or 2 little bumps, and now, he doesn't break out anymore.
My neighbor's Chesapeake Bay Retriever had the same thing. She thought it was from the water in the lake by our house. |

Did you see his photo?
Did you happen to go to the album and look at the rash. They are almost like lesions but not wet just shaped kind of like that. Thanks so much for your response. Wilson just turned 2 years old on July 11th. He is the best dog we have ever had and I can't bear to think of anything happening to him.
Thanks again. Let me know if you looked at the photos though. |

What kind of food are you feeding him?
If you noticed this not long after you started adding the canned food, try not feeding him that. See if it clears up. Depending on the type of food he's being fed, he may have developed an allergy to something in the canned or dry. But I would still take him to the vet to be sure. |

Now that looks itchy.
Yeast infections can look like that too. With yeast, small water blisters can develop just under the skin in a circle, the red line on the outer edge will be crisp, not blurry. Most times yeast infection are due to food allergies, too many carbohydrates, undigestible foods or another immune system disorder. If it is yeast, vinegar wipes 2x or more a day can help with the itching. Let us know what the vet says. |

He thinks it is a yeast infection... or a food allergy. He was rather vague. I am not happy with my Vet. I may get a second opinion. Wilson is the smartest most wonderful dog I have ever had. I appreciate everyone's help in easing my worries before going to the Vet. I love this website! I will update again if any other news.

It never hurts to get a second opinion. Hopefully you can get this figured out. Any type of rash is uncomfortable.
Keep us posted. What kind of food are you feeding him? |

Did your vet recommend a hypoallergenic prescription diet or any alternatives to the prescription diet? If not, I would look for a new vet too. A 2nd opinion doesn't hurt. Some hypoallergenic diets are commercially available. My old vet recommended salmon & potato diets, there are also venison and duck diets that are good too. Be patient, food allergies can take upto 2 months to clear up after you change the food. You can also feed home cooked meals and raw food. HTH |
