Glaucoma
My dog was just diagnosed with glaucoma. Well, the vet really didn't know much about what he was doing and I pretty much diagnosed her myself, but her breed is predispositioned to the condition and she is from a puppy mill - so I have no doubt that it is. My vet didn't really know how to treat it, but he called another vet for me and got a quote on how much they'd charge. If I went to that vet, it'd cost me $60-$80 every month to treat and try to reduce the pressure in her eye. I've been told by a few different people that that seems like a very large number and not quite right, so I am wondering if anyone knows the average cost of treating glaucoma? I'm going to call around to other vets in the area, but I'd love to know what kind of price range to look for so that I'm not getting charged excessively.

There is not Opthalmologists in the area. One of the local vets knows a lot about it and knows how to treat it though. And he's the one that will charge 60-80 dollars. I've learned that it is the normal price range, and called all the area vets to make sure no one was cheaper.
I can't afford it, so for now we'll just keep her on the pills and eyedrops that my current vet provided us with. They don't specifically treat the glaucoma, but it takes away the pain and the irritation of her eye. And then when she's lost all of her sight, we'll just go in and get the eyes surgically removed. |

Bummer....can you treat at home or is it too risky? I know it may be difficult to think of now, but what about eye removal if you cannot afford support maybe removal is the next best thing.

My Delsi who passed away this past Sept. developed glaucoma (after an accident put one eye out and had to have it removed) and went to see an Ophthalmologest and she was put on Methazolamide and Pred acetate/Lotemax and had to have check-ups every month. This went on for a bit over a year before the eye ulcerated and had to be removed.
