Natural Heartworm Preventatives and Treatments - Need ideas for research

We just moved to an area where there are occasional Heartworm infestations and we happen to be less than 40 miles from an infested area (I called area rescues and shelters for this info). I'd like to learn more about the many options out there for heartworm prevention and treatment so I can make decisions about my little Hank's health. Since he has a heart murmur, I'm a little concerned but not too worried since he's an indoor dog, not-immune compromised and eats quality food. We'll be consulting a Vet Cardiologist or Holistic Vet who has successfully treated Heartworm before so no worries.

This is what I've been able to find so far:

Foods/Diet - Diatomacious Earth (don't know how this works yet), Vitamin B rich raw diet, low potassium diet, low salt diet,

Herbs - oral administration of garlic, hawthorn tincture & parsley

Holistic Approaches - Heartworm Nosode, Life Plus's PARATOX, ParaStat by Premier Research Labs

Insect Repellant or Mosquito Repellant - Lice Killer (essential oil mixture for louse repellant), Essential Oils in an Oil Base (Tea Tree, Eucalyptus, Cedarwood, Lemongrass, Eucalyptus, Peppermint, Lavender, and Bergamot) or Baby Vicks Rub

Pharmaceuticals - Macrocyclic Lactone (ML), Ivermectin (Heartgard by Merial, Iverhart by Virbac and Tri-Heart Plus by Schering-Plough), Milbemycin oxime (Interceptor & Sentinel by Novartis), Selamectin (Revolution by Pfizer) and Moxidectin (Advantage Multi by Bayer)

Any info and/or references would be appreciated, Thanks

Chinaroad Lowchens of Australia - Ticks, fleas, bees, flies, snakes and other gremlins! And how to deal with them!

I'm not far from you so could you tell me where the heartworm infestation is? I like to carry my home-made repellent spray to mist the girls when we travel. I do add different fragrance oils to their shampoo and conditioner that also repell fleas and other insects.

California seems to be really splotchy, we have so many types of ecosystems here you really have to ask often.

Above the "grade" in SLO is supposed to be a hot spot, they said Atascadero, Santa Margarita and Paso Robles area get infections, they said medium risk not too high. Arroyo Grade, Pismo, San Luis Obispo seems to be low risk. Not sure about Morro Bay area though, I'll have to ask.

I know Santa Cruz is a hot spots too. I've heard Eureka/Humbolt area gets it.

We were low risk in Hollister, probably due to the pesticides used in the fields

What areas do you know of that are medium to high risk?

Sounds like the closer you live to the ocean, the less heartworm reports. We live about 2 miles from the ocean. I've never seen or been bitten by a misquito since we moved here in 85. We do see the huge males that show up for a couple of weeks in early spring, but they don't bite.
