Update on Skipper
The vet explained to me what happened to Skipper. He had heartworm treatment about 10 days ago. The worms are dieing and breaking up. This causes a flood of worm pieces in the blood stream. Apparently some of these worm pieces got clogged in the vessels in his lungs which then burst the vessels. The Vitamin K shot has helped with the clotting of the blood and will prevent him from bleeding out.
When we brought him home I crated him immediately and he's been in the crate ever since. I let him out alone to go potty and offer him a fresh drink of water when he has pottied. I fed him a bit of baby food and a few kibble this morning and he gobbled it right down. We waited to see if his stomach was able to hold the food. He did fine this morning so I repeated the process with strained turkey and kibble at noon and tonight he'll get the same. He is a lot brighter today, his eyes don't look so sad anymore and has a little more bounce in his step. We still won't allow him to do anything other than eat, drink, potty and sleep until we are sure he's out of the woods.
Thanks for your concern. This little guy was dumped at the shelter because his owner didn't want to bother with him anymore.. He's 11 years old and just the sweetest guy!
