To Many Ticks

Unfortunately, even with a flea & tick medicine, my poor pup, Lacy, has been attacked by one too many ticks . The length each tick has been stuck to her, is unknown to me or anyone, since I do not live with her, which scares me verrryy much.

I have made an appointment for her on Wednesday (I wish sooo bad it could be sooner), to have her checked, because I just don't want to take any risk & will be talking about another brand of medicine or another method (she has alot of fur, so getting the liquid medicine right down to her skin is difficult and it irritates her whole body).

But I guess what I'm wondering if exactly what ticks can cause to a dog and are there any temp. methods to help prevent anymore from biting her? But since she does have alot of fur, its very hard to just look at her and spot a tick.

I don't know. I'm just worried about her.

**edit to add** - We use frontline.

What kind of flea and tick medicine did you use? If its an over the counter, that could explain why it didn't work...Those rarely work! The best flea and tick I would recommend would be something like Frontline or Revolution.

I believe we use frontline. We buy everything health wise from our vet, I can't think of taking that kind of risk with her.

You can find frontline plus and k9 advantix at some different stores some pet stores and some feed stores, I get mine on ebay for very good prices that are less than half of what my vet charges. Revolution has to be purchased from a vet because it is for fleas, ticks, and heartworms. My vet doesn't recommend it or sell it because a dog came back heartworm positive on it. I use frontline plus on my dogs and the only ticks I see are ones crawling on them right after they come inside that haven't latched on yet. Usually flea and tick medicines you can get at the grocery store ect are useless. I live in Georgia in the woods so ticks are very prevalent and I have to use preventitive. Dogs can get many horrible diseases from ticks including Ehrlichiosis, Basesiosis, Lyme Disease, and
Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever.

humm I think we posted at the same time. If you live in a tick infested area your dogs are bound to come inside with ticks on them. Do these ticks bite or do you just find them crawling? I find it strange that your frontline isn't working.

Lacy is currently on Frontline (just called my dad and checked) and I think I may have switch her to K9 or something else, because it obviously isn't working for her, since she has had so many. We've never had this big of a problem before, but we also had a verry warm winter, so maybe thats why there are so many.

Are there any simple signs that a dog may be infected? I don't live there, so that makes it just a bit harder to tell if she had any changes, but I plan to visit more often to get a better idea before going to the vets.

I am going to have her tested, seeing how we have had over at least 3 ticks on her (that I at least know of), I just can't imagine taking the chance. I know that sometimes you can luck out and have ticks that aren't infected, but I'm not willing to not know.

**editted to add**
oh goodness, they are definately biting her, and they don't want to let go either. All 3 of them have been attached, but who knows how many more there could have been that bit her and left.

I think Frontline isn't working because Lacy rubbed it off, since it was irritating her. So no doubt am I going to switch her medicine.

ok if you have only found 3 ticks in all that is pretty normal. The frontline doesn't repel them it kills them when they bite down. If you live in a heavily tick infested area it's normal to find ticks on your dogs. I do on mine every once in a while. Don't worry too much unless you see an engorged tick on her.

If they still look like this then that means they haven't been on there for long.

ugh. those were some pretty disgusting pictures. blahhh.

the last one i found on her looked like that last photo. I can't remember what the first two looked like. I want to say the last one, but I wouldn't count on my memory at the moment.

I guess I am lucky we don't live in any tick infested area. My grandmas house always had ticks, but the last two houses we lived in (including this one) I have never seen one tick on any of my dogs!

If you find one on her that looks like the first picture then you should worry because that means the frontline isn't working. If you find tiny ticks on her you shouldn't worry too much.

Ewwwww!!!! One of the few things that freak/gross me out are blood-sucking insects! Nasty little buggers. I *think* I found a tick a few days ago. It was a small-ish black/brown bug. But I didn't exactly find it ON Zoe. Found it near her leg when she was lying down. My question is, would a tick be found like that or do they stay on the dog? It did jump every time I picked it up.
Zoe gets Revolution from the vet. I'll need to get that soon since June is coming up fast, but...what are the chances of it not working? I thought Revolution was supposed to be a top brand?

We found one on Mandi today. It hadn't bitten her yet, but she isn't on any medicine on her. The problem I have had last summer is that it made her hair yellow and greasy all over and since she gets a bath every week, I think it just washes it out? I think I will try some of those natural remedies calgal (i think?) posted before. hmmm

I just got some herbal pills, forget the name and am too lazy to get up right now, but its main active ingredient is garlic and it is supposed to give off an odor that bugs don't like.It is supposed to be used with frontline (or other) to repel bugs. It is supposed to take a week or two to start working, but I will let you know if there is a difference, as we always bring home lots of ticks when we go walking in the woods.
