Joint supplements?

I've noticed that both Blackie and Rose have become a bit more arthritic lately (slower getting up, can't jump up onto things like they used to). I've also noticed that Blackie's hips are starting to go bad. He's lost his balance twice on our tile floor in the past week and when Chloe playfull jumped on him his hind legs gave out and he fell over.

A while back we took Blackie to the vet because his knee would give out on him and they gave us some joint/anti-inflammitory meds, but a side effect was that it could cause liver cancer in Labs...so that medicine was thrown out.

Would a non-perscription joint med help to keep them both a bit more comfortable, or should I not worry about it? I don't think they too far gone to need a perscription, especially with the side effects, but if picking up a tablet or whatnot from a farmers market would help them out I'd gladly do it.

Our Swissy had very dry skin and at 5 yrs was starting to have trouble getting up. Our vet suggested fish oil, 3000 mg per day which has eliminated his dry skin and has supper glossy coat. I plan to drop back some on the amount soon. He suggested glucosamin and chrondroitin sulfate also. 2000 mg every 12 hrs for 2 months, 1500 every day for 3 weeks then 1000 for life. I have yet to see any improvement from that although only been giving him that for a week. Remember, the amounts are for 130# dog.

I use Glyco-Flex and buy it from VetAmerica. Reasonably priced (I buy the stage II for $44 with shipping. It lasts be about 40 days because Buzz gets a double dose.)

VetAmerica is the cheapest place I've found so far.
