It really depends on how bad it is. I've had 2 dogs with heart murmurs, a Papillon and a Cocker Spaniel that lived to 14 and 12 years of age. Pepe (the Papillon) if I remember correctly was fine until he was about 8 or 9, and I think then he had to start taking medication for the murmur. Toby (the Cocker) never did go on meds for it. Both dogs were active and happy, only started having issues as old age crept up on them.

I agree. It depends how serious it is. Your vet can best tell you how to deal with it and what to expect.
My Chihuahua had a severe heart murmur and he romped around like a puppy (on and off) until he was 17yrs old (when he past away). The only thing it really effected was his ability to exercise. He was on meds for a fair while though. Cass. |

My Chihuahua, Abby, was diagnosed with a heart murmur late last year (she's nearly 8 years old). We were told by our vet that at this stage it's mild, but to keep an eye on her at night and check that she isn't coughing, which is not a good sign. She can still exercise, and it's recommended, but we do just need to keep a careful watch on her to make sure she doesn't wear herself out too much.

IS this the puppy you say is perfectly fine?
A lot of the time puppies will get heart murmors, and they will go away as they get older. My dachshund Harry (now 12) had a heart murmor which was very serious when he was younger, but he started exercising and getting very fit and active..and by 3 years old it was completely gone. And hes still very healthy, and active. |
