Bad habit or something wrong?
For as long as I can remember Chloe my little jack russell has always had this habit licking her self like crazy and then hunching whatever she can find. She isnt spayed yet and she just came out of heat about 4 monthes ago. That was her third cycle so I know spaying isnt going to help with preventing cancer but it can still prevent pyometra so I guess it is still a good idea to proceed with spaying. But I am wondering if this behavior is something medical or just a bad habit? It scared me because their is some drainage, small amounts of clear liquid but there is no smell to it and it only happens when she starts licking and what not. There is no redness or swelling either. I was worried it was pyometra but she has litterially done this her entire life even when she is no were near coming in or out of heat. She seems to do it mostly when she is bored and will get very defensive if you try to touch her anywhere near there while she is doing it but will stop if you tell her to and doesnt care if you exam when it isnt bothering her. She doesnt act sick at all and some days she wont do it at all. I am going to make her a vet appt soon to talk about spaying and getting the blood work out of the way but I was hoping for some opinions until then.
.......On a different note I have noticed over the last few days her lower tummy has gotten kinda fat looking. I dont really know the best way to describe it so I took a pic of it and will post it below. It doesnt feel abnormal just feels like fatty tissue and I can poke and push on it and she jut lays there like she is getting a belly rub. She is eating and drinking normally. Also going to the bathroom normally other than her stool seems to be alittle more peeblely than normal. Anyone have any thoughts on what could be the cause? Is she just getting chubby or something more serious? ![]() |

Hmm that doesn't sound very normal to me. I would suggest you take her to a vet so you can discuss these problems with a professional, who will be able to offer you proper advice and find a solution. Sorry I can't be of any more help..

I agree, I think discussing it with your vet is the best option. If she's not comfortable with you "inspecting" while she's licking it, it makes me wonder if it does bother her.
She hasn't been unsupervised at all has she? I think it's probably just some pudgy-ness from her heat. |

She isnt in heat at this point. She has been out of heat for about 4 monthes now and no she is never left unsupervised at all. I am inbetween vets right and am in the process of finding another good one. I think the pudgyness is just her getting chubby because since the hot weather has arrived she and my other dogs are quite content sleeping most of the day in the nice AC so there has been a decrease in her excerise but not in food intake. Not a good combo. As soon as I find a good vet I am going to have her spayed and be done with it. I dont ever plan on having her breed so there is no reason that I shouldnt have already had it done other than my own fear of it.

Well we went to the vet this morning. I took in a urine sample but the results wont be in til monday. She said she didnt think it was pyometra due to the fact that she is acting completly normal other than licking herself and whatnot, there was no discharge at the vet and I told them it only comes in small amounts when she licks herself. There in no odor and the vet said she looked good. She thinks it might be a mild bladder infection or even a false pregency. They didnt do any blood work at this point which is the first thing I thought they would do. So I guess we will find out Monday. I am still slightly worried but I guess if the vet said she is ok then she is ok. They did give me a 5 day dose of amoxicillin. Is there any side effects of this I need to know about?

Amoxicillin
I was just reading up on amoxicillin and it seems to have a few possible side effects in which I am worried about. The main one being it can cause a dog to go into shock. I called back out to the vet to see if she had ever been on this because I couldnt remeber and she hasnt. Should I give this to her? We arent even forsure she has an infection yet and I dont want to give her something that could hurt her for no reason. Anyone here have any experience with this antiboitic?

I'd give her the medication when you have time to really watch her. When I give a new med. I make sure I'm around to watch for potential side effects and they can be addressed quickly. Hope she feels better soon.

Well the vet called yesterday and chloe has a mild bladder infection. So we are to finish her meds and she should be fine. I started giving her the amoxicillin sat and within 15 mins of taking the first one she threw up. So talk to the vet and she said try again only this time give it with a whole meal. So did that and the samething happened. I guess her tummy is just to weak for it so the vet is going to be giving me something different today but all in all goods news and thanks for all the help and support

The vet finally got her a new antibiotic and it is baytril, so I just gave her the first dose about 40 mins ago after a good meal and a trip outside. So far so good, no vomiting or anything. Of course I am on the edge of my chair with anxiety watching her breathing and everything non stop but she must have picked up on that because she left my lap and got in bed for her afternoon nap. So I called the vet to ask how long I should watch her for allergic reaction(swelling and whatnot) and I was shocked she said after 2 doses which would be 48 hours. I didnt think it would be that long. I assumed that within a few hours we would be in the clear for swelling and all that stuff atleast.
