Unhappy My Spanky is in pain / has trouble getting up

Hi all, I'm new to this forum but hopefully someone will have some suggestions for me. My 13 year old Lab/Somekindofaspaniel mix baby is having trouble getting up after activities. This afternoon he played for 10 or 15 minutes in the yard and when he came in, his hind legs were trembling and "split" under him. he was shaking for about 5 minutes and could not get up (even though I tried to help) for about 20 minutes.

Lately I've noticed that he seems to be in pain in his hips or legs but this is the worst I've seen yet. He is always slow to get up or lay down for the past year or so.

What might this be?
Do I need to take him to a vet?
Are there over the counter products that could help him?

Please advise; I hate to see my puppy in pain!

Thanks!

-Steph

You should definately take the dog to the vet ASAP! There are a lot of different health conditions that could be causing what you have described.... although it sounds to me like a hip problem. The vet would be able to answer your questions, and figure out what's going on.

I wish you the very best of luck!

Yes definatly take him to the vet first. He may have some hip problems or arthritis. These can usually be managed with pain medication which your vet will perscribe. Good luck I hope your dog can recover from the pain he is feeling.

The only way to find out is to take him to a vet, and I'd take him as soon as possible. With an older dog, he's more prone to problems such as hip dysplasia (which he well might have, by the sounds of it). It's better to get your dog treated now than wait any longer, as his problem could get worse if left alone.

I agree...the vet is the only course of action here. Make an appointment ASAP.

Cass.

Better late than never here Terpe, but I thought i'd chime in as well...

First and foremost, yes, get him checked ASAP by the vet. I do alot of reading about this kind of stuff and it does sound like some kind of arthritic condition. Especially the description being it's been a gradual increasing progression of restricted movement.
I dont know what the $$ situation is, but there has been lots of good things from stemcell research lately in using your own dogs cells to rebuild damaged joints and bones. It's pretty simple (in principal anyway) and I saw the story on NIghtline..

Here's the link if you're interested: ABC News: Stem Cell Breakthrough for Suffering Pets

Goodluck!!!
