Hello! I recently got a maltese puppy, Charlie, who is a delight, but he has developed kennel cough. Since he's still in the process of getting his shots the vet. put him on Primor. He has been acting distant, scared and disoriented. I understand that he's feeling ill, but this is my first dog and I'm anxious and nervous about everything. Please let me know if anyone can help - I appreciate it! Take care

Has kennel cough been confirmed? Where did you get him? Whenever a dog isn't feeling well - don't try to cuddle to comfort him. Let him/her come to you. Check often and make sure symptoms aren't getting worse. Plenty of fresh water and feed more & smaller meals. Just like humans rest is a key ingredient to getting well.

Poor little guy!
My dachshund got kennel cough when she was 8 weeks old. My vet told me to try and keep her quiet and lots of rest since running around aggrivates the coughing and makes it worse. My vet gave her Torbutrol tablets which is also used as a pain medication to sort of sedate her and make her sleepy to help stop the coughing. She was also put on an antibiotic because the kennel cough turned into pneumonia. The breeder didn't take her to the vet when she got sick and by the time I bought her and brought her home and took her to the vet it was pretty bad. My dachshund acted the same way, like she was disoriented and sleepy. I put her in her kennel and let her sleep most of the day and just kept an eye on her. She improved really fast so I am sure your little guy will be back to his spunky self soon. I was told that kennel cough usually isnt very serious if it is found right away and it usually goes away by two weeks. |

Give your pup a cuddle from me and lots of love and rest and he'll be better soon.
Good luck. Carrie |

I fostered a dog that was recovering from Kennel Cough. Just keep an eye on him, it's not super-serious if it's treated soon after it starts and although recovery time varies, it'll probably take a couple weeks until he starts to get back to his normal self.
If you have a wire crate for him, it could help if you crated him. Crating the dog makes them feel more secure and also keeps them calmer, so they don't walk around and aggravate their cough. |
