lyme disease questions

Hi...

My dog was just diagnosed with lyme disease. He was in terrible pain but is responding to the course of antibiotics.

I have a couple of questions for anyone out there who has been through this...

- is there any way to tell how long a dog has been infected?
my dog had what seemed to be a seizure on the way to the vet and I'm worried this indicates he's had it for a while

-how common are the renal failure issues that accompany lyme disease? What symptoms should I look for other than vomiting, increased drinking and weight loss?

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum. I am sorry to hear about your dog. I hope we here can be of some help to you, either with good advice, or just comforting words.

Here are a couple links with much information on the disease. I hope they help you.

http://www.dogstuff.info/lyme_disease_update.html

My Jake, who passed away last September, tested positively for Lyme disease. The test he received showed that he was exposed to Lyme, not necessarily that he was infected at the time. This test is common in most vet practices. It is just an antibody test. Seems that you are sure your dog actually HAS the disease. I believe the links I gave answer the questions you asked (I briefly scanned through them).

Good luck with your dog. I wish him health.

Keep us updated!

Hi Dee7, and welcome to Global Paw! I am sorry to hear that your dog has been infected with Lyme, but if detected in time, and treated properly, dogs often live long and comfortable lives. Check out the links that Melanie posted.

Thanks for the help. Mellie, I'm really sorry to hear about your dog. Did he pass away because of the lyme disease?

Noooo, Jake did not pass from the Lyme (boy, I hope I didn't scare you with that thought!). Jake was old with many issues when we adopted him. He had a sudden collapse from a previously undetected tumor that ruptured.

Like Lesya (Schwe) mentioned, Lyme can be manageable. Again, I hope all goes well!

sorry to hear about your dog. lyme disease is crazy common where i live, unfortunately. if you're concerned about kidney problems, it would be a good idea to have your vet run a urinalysis, preferably on first morning's urine. drinking more and urinating more are usually good indicators. vomiting usually only occurs when the kidney disease is more advanced.
