raised lumps on my great dane

can anyone give me some advise i have a 5 month old great dane and since yesterday (friday) she has come out in lumps over her entire body they are raised and she is itching them like mad took her to vet this morning (saturday) she thinks its an allergic reaction to something but not sure what we have been given piriton its now saturday nite and these lumps have come back they are horrible all over her esp her ears does anybody no what this is it is very distressing seeing her like this

My guess is that she got into some type of weed or plant...or perhaps some sort of chemical of cleaning supplies.

What shampoo are you using?

thank you for getting back str8 away i havent used a shampoo on her for about 3 weeks as i have to choose my times to do that she does not like water very much where i live there is a downstairs into a neighbours garden i caught her down there licking a pot that contained white paint she didnt get it open just licked the top but did have a bit of white dry paint on her mouth probably a bit that has dried on top of the lid do u think that could of done this too her and should i tell the vet so she can be treated for it

Benadryl will take the swelling and itching away.

I have a girl with allergies, and we have a reaction about once a month. But we still haven't found out what causes it. But the Benadryl helps control it.

Try to find out what type of plant it was she got into. If the vet is open give them a call with the name. If they are closed try searching the internet for the type of plant.

I imagine that licking paint, depending on the type, could cause that type of reaction. Then again, it could be something totally different.

Did she wake up with these bumps? Or did they appear over the part of the day?

what happened was friday morning i woke up and thought i heard her cry that was early 6 o,clock thought i had dreamt it so went back to sleep got up at 7 to find her right eye was very large looked like a boxer that had been hit along with these raised lumps they went down and we didnt see them again till this morning so we took her to the vets but they had almost gone by the time we had got there but the vet could see what we meant now about 2 hours ago they have come back but look a lot worse bigger and all over ears looking at her now they have gone slightly down but dreading when they come back

Ask the vet how much Benadryl she can have and that should make her feel better. It doesn't sound like she got into any paint and I doubt that would cause this. It does sound like an allergy to food or some plant. What food is she on? Does it contain flax oil or seed? Some dogs are allergic to that. Also corn can sometimes be a culprit among other things. I'd suggest for a week or so putting her on a bland diet with just a couple ingredients so you can narrow it down. I'd try plain boiled or baked chicken and rice. Look at the ingredients in her food. If the bumps have disappeared after eating just chicken and rice, introduce some corn meal into her chicken and rice and see if the bumps come back. If not, try adding another one of the ingredients you see in her food. This is one way to do the detective work. But it could take a long time because you'd want to use the thing you just added for a few days as it can take a few days for her antibodies to over react as they do in an allergic situation.

Another thing would be to simply try different foods that have some differring ingredients.

It may not be her food at all, but some plant she's eaten or rubbed up against. Is there any poison oak or ivy around? It could even be some insect. Did the vet look her over for mites or some other microscopic thing? But it sounds more like a food or plant. I'm just grasping at straws here.....don't really know much.

Let us know how she does. I'm sorry she's having such a rotten time. You could even get a 2nd opinion if it doesn't clear up sometime soon.

we do have some climbing ivy in garden is that the same as poison ivy? also does anybody know if sardines in sunflower oil would do any harm to her i put a small tin in her dried food 3 times a day shes on (burns vennison and brown rice)

Well, either one of those things could be the culprit. If it were me, I'd eliminate the sardines. They are quite rich and terribly salty. I wouldn't think they'd be very good for the dog. Fish oil is usually good, but it's possible that in this case, it's too rich of a type...am not sure, but if you cut down the number of things she's given, it would be easier to go through the process of elimination to discover what it is that might be bothering her.

it was hives was to do with the ivy downstairs shes back to her normal self now
