Belly Button?
Winston (10 weeks tomorrow) has a little bump protruding from his belly. Could it be a belly button? It's perfectly centered and doesn't look misshapen or anything. It hasn't come up suddenly but I don't want to just let it go...
I just didn't know if puppies had belly buttons or not. If they don't, I'd better get him to the vet tomorrow. ![]() |

Yes, dogs have belly buttons-- it's the spot where the umbilical chord was attached! However, they should not protrude. It is possible he has a hernia. It could be an inguinal hernia, which goes away on its own. If you are concerned then I would give your vet a call and ask them whether you should take him in or not.

Most umbilical hernias are self correcting. He could also just have an "outie"

Dogs do have belly buttons, but 99% of the time a little bump like you are talking about is a hernia. Most do fix themselves but if they were bad enough usually they have to be fixed by a vet. Just keep your baby quiet, no jumping or hard play until he sees the vet. Good Luck, hope he's just an outtie.

Thanks, all. I did a little reading and a little belly rubbing last night and it definitely seems to be a reducible umbilical hernia. The only problem will be keeping him from hard play -- he loves to tear around the yard like a madman.
