Pimples on Spay scar
My rotti pup Ariel was spayed at the beginning of July. After about 10 days I noticed that a little hole was along the spay scar and a small amount of pus was present. We went back to vet who prescribed antiobotics for 1 week.
Well another week has gone by and the little things are back. They look more like pimples than an infection along the scar. There is very little redness or irritation. There are three of them now. I am treating the ones that have broken open with Iodine and washing the area with anitbacterial soap. Has anyone had anything similar? |

well, a similar condition is present in almost all humans, yet only a few have any physical symptoms...This is caused (in humans) by the human papillomavirus...which causes warts on hands, feet, chicken pox, acne, etc...and is even an STD (HPV)...symptoms can include raised mounds on the skin, with pus drainage...it mirrors what you have described pretty well..although I am not aware of the doggie equivolent.
If it is a virus, then anti-biotics will not treat it. Although there is a very good chance that it's just a bacterial infection if it is right after surgery. I wouldn't worry about it too much...I'm sure it will clear up soon. |

I would worry too...but it's all part of the natural healing process. Heck, it could just be her body attempting to create scar tissue. As long as you clean the open sores with something (iodine is best, in my opinion), you shouldn't have to worry unless it gets worse...or does not begin to heal soon.

Pimples are usually caused by the Staphlococcus bacteria. What you're doing sounds fine. If she gets more or they become really pussy or excessive, better call the vet again. Good luck.

When my golden was spayed she also developed these tiny red bumps around her incision, although she did not have any puss. The redness could be just the raw skin, a kind of razor burn. As this area of a dog's body is usually covered in fur it can become irritated when it is shaved for the purpose of spaying. But if it becomes infected or develops opens sores go back to your vet.

I'm going back to the vet with her today. I don't like the feel of the incision. There are lumps. One of those is the pimple type that is leaking pus - the other is 3x the size and solid to the feel.
She was spayed via laser and has no stitches to be infected. |

Just got back from vets.. wanted to let everyone know that the 'pimples' where 'infection blisters' the Vet lanced them so they can drain. It could be caused because the sutures didn't dissolve all the way.
