Help! My bassett ate 500gm of congac chocolate

hi
I'm a new member. I signed up in the hope of finding someone who's had experience with dogs eating huge quantities of alcoholic chocolate. 500 grams to be exact! it was 3 days ago so he's obviously not dying, but he's slept for the last 2 days. He's struggled to eat dinner, which has never happened in all hi 11 years. The vet says that he should be dead but if he's still here he'll be fine... He's not fine tho. Anyone got a comment on this?
Thanks

Well, I do know that Bassett's will eat anything they come across. If I were you I'd just do whatever the vet says to do (did he give any meds to your dog or offer any kind of advice?) If the vet says he's fine, then maybe it's just taking a few days for the chocolate to clear out of his system (I'm not a vet though, so don't take my word for it) Thank God your bassett is still alive!
Other than that, the only comment I have is to put baby safety locks on the cabinets and make sure there's a lifeguard on duty at all times

I'm very surprised your vet didn't want him to come in right away and personally would find a new vet.

Your boy really should go in, even though its been three days the effects as well as chemicals will linger causing additional hardships on his liver, kidneys and heart. At eleven years of age he needs to be checked.

If a Vet. told you that, then he/she isn't a Vet. at all, but some quack who doesn't know what to do with this problem. I'd be reporting this individual. I sure hope your dog comes out of this without any serious effects. Do you think the booze in the Choc. would be the cause of him sleeping so much? I would say is if he isn't any better now than he was yesterday, take him to another Vet. ASAP!

For reasons undefined, look for a vet who's more willing to share the intircacies of what's involved, especially in the areas of providing basic information, and to warn owners about specific signs to look out for.

As to whether what your vet did was right or wrong, I am not in the position to judge. If you want a quick answer, it would be 'yes' and 'no'.

Thanks to all who replied to my post.
The vet has been appropriately disposed of and a new one found. I did find out some alarming info on toxicity cause from chocolate. Dark chocolate is the worst of all, and my Basil lives (although still coming down) to agree.
From my calculations he exceeded the leathal dose by about 200 grams? but he's got more lives than a cat ...
With regards to vets though, I couldn't find anyone who could suggest a treatment once the chocolate had been digested. The main issue is with the heart and apparently you're in the clear if the situation is not worsening...
Anyway, he's alive and well. Thanks again to those who replied. much appreciated

hi
the worst thing chocolate does is making the dog beeing constipatet, give cream, not whiped yet ant vegetable oil to get the stuff moving... if it is still in there, but about drunk dogs, i don't know anything... i wouldn't know If they get a hang over.... ;-)
