fast breathing

I rencently noticed my chihuahua breath rate is higher than 1 year ago when we first got her. Her breath rate now is about 60 per min.
however, this does not affect her energy to run and play, she is able to jog with me 20 min straight.
She also gags and coughs once in a while, average of once per week.

We took her to the vets to check on her cough recently, the vet did a little check up to see if theres any problem with her wind pipe and gave us antibiotics. That worked for the coughing however we did not mention to the vet about her breathing rate. I was wondering if her breathing is something to worry about.

thanks for everyone who are willing to read my question

call your vet and ask them if it's something to worry about.

That's a lot of running for such a small dog! You might want to check with your vet and see if that's too much exercise.

Dogs that small really don't need to exercise that long. Just running around in the house or yard is enough. I'd call the Vet. and ask about the breathing.

i called the vet office this morning and they said it might be from the summer heat. I measured her breath rate again while she is resting upstairs in the room with air conditioning and her breath rate was around 20-35. The jogging with my chi however is more like me chasing her down every couple min here and there, mostly from squirels, rabbits, ground hogs ect. She does slow down here and then to sniff around (by the time i get to her shes running again). Thanks for all the help

Sound like what Tommy had. The coughing and fast breathing might be due to Pneumonia. Lots of people think pneumonia is due to cold weather, but in most cases that is not true. Its just an infection of the lungs, and can be caused by many things. Be careful not to over exercise her, as it will only make her lungs work harder causing her to breath and cough even heavier.
Also the coughing could be heart related- an elarged heart pressing on her windpipe. Or fluid in the lungs. I dont mean to sound drastic here, its just that it sounds like what Tommy had, so im just kinda letting you know of the possibilities.
I hope she gets better soon. And hopefully the antibiotics should work.
