Panting Puppy

I found a puppy which appears to be a Lab mix and about 8 weeks old. She is eating and drinking and sleeping ok, but always appears to be panting, even when she is resting. Do puppys pant non-stop?

Some of them will, especially if its hot out. Its been hot all over latley, so even in rest they can still be hot, which leads to panting.

Make sure he ALWAYS has clean cool wanter to drink.

We leave our AC on in the hottest part of the day for Kino, even if we arnt home. But ive noticed he pants a lot more now that its 90 out, in the winter hell run and play in the snow and hardly ever pant, unless we play for a long time.

Its usually the heat. But sometimes dogs can pant if they are stressed.

Hear say

Somewhere along the line, I heard that they will pant if they are in pain. I was wondering if that may be a cause. It has been 116 here, but I keep all animals in doors, especially during the summer and give them refrigerated water all day long. I keep blinds and curtains shut in the day (believe me, there still is plenty of light coming through). So that may be it. I was worried that she was maybe in pain of some sort. She doesn't act upset, but sometimes animals can be quite the troopers and you may not know about something until some time has passed.

Pain is a cause for stress, so yes, a dog could pant when in pain. What temperature is the room where the puppy lives?

How long has the pup been panting while indoors? Any signs of difficulty breathing? Runny nose or something of that nature? How long have you had this pup?

How long has the pup been panting? Has it been non-stop since arriving or only after certain events?

Since I found her in the bushes... I woke up and heard a noise in my bushes. I had heard the same barking throughout the weekend but had not seen anything. This time I went out and there she was. She had no collar and was quite dirty. She was a little scared at first but was quick to warm up to me. Since moment one I noticed it. My husband stayed home to wash her and play with her. She is clean and being taken care of but I noticed that she is still panting and so I wondered if this was normal or suspicious.

I'd say suspicious if the pup has been doing it from the very start and would take her in to make sure your not dealing with a URI or HW positive pup. HW is unlikely at her age but anything is possible.

Yes, pain as well as stress can cause panting but unless kept in too warm of an area ( not the case here ) dogs do not pant non-stop for 36+ hours without there being some reason behind it. A trip to the vet is certainly in order and the sooner the better. Good luck and let us kow what you find out.

The Finally

So, I found a home for the puppy girl. She is going to train to assist a person who has seizures. And before I would let her go, I took her to the vet and made sure everything was ok. It turns out that the Vet said that it would be too early in her life for worms to get bad. He said some dogs breathe heavier than others and she was fine. He said her belly was a bit swollen but she looked healthy. I dewormed her (as a precaution) and started her on her baby vaccinations. She is Boarder Collie/ Lab mix. After I made sure she had a clean bill of health, I turned her over to her new owner. Then, I got a call about Two days later from a lady who saw my newpaper adds reporting I found a puppy. She stated that she lived nearby and found a small 8 week old boy and thinks someone dumped the litter around our area. When I called her back, she had already placed the little boy as well.

Glad it wasn't anything serious and good for you taking care of her and placing her so well!! Thank you from the bottom of her heart and mine.
